Measuring Blood Glucose and the effect of medication

Every other day, I make porridge with 40g of rolled oats and 180 ml of skimmed milk. This morning, my fasting BG was 5.6 and two hours later it was 6.0.

As many people here recommend avoiding porridge, I have two questions:

1. Would my medication help keep my BG level down so it didn't spike?

Sukkarto SR 1000mg tablets - 2 a day - one with breakfast each day
Empagliflozin 10mg tablets - not taken until lunch time each day
Ozempic 0.25mg - injected Monday lunchtime

2. In some low GI books it suggests BG spikes an hour after eating, so would it be better to test after an hour rather than waiting two hours?

Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

My thoughts: I think that the Ozempic does help with first phase insulin response. MetFormin- not really, it just lowers the amount of glucose produced by the liver, Empaglifozin makes you pee out excess glucose so again probably not really stopping spikes as such.

Yes you almost certainly would have been higher at 1 hour but the point of the 2 hours is that even non-diabetics would spike at one hour (especially after a bowl of porridge). But they would be back to normal by 2 hours. So if you’re STILL high after 2 hours it’s a sign that you probably should rethink the contents of the meal.

I think from the look of it you’re probably OK with porridge. FWIW I’m on identical meds to you and so am I, although less so in the morning (I’m more insulin resistant in the mornings as are many type 2s). I tend to have porridge at supper time if I have it.

Also I make my porridge with full fat milk and add cream which makes my BG response even less (I sometimes add chia seeds too). So those might be things you’d want to try.

I have a CGM and would probably spike to 7.5 mmol or so at about 60-85 mins, and then be back to baseline after that.

I'd hesitate calling 6.0 a spike, especially up from 5.6. That seems normal to me

This is what I call a spike. Your mileage may vary

Similar to me, three times a week I have 40g of porridge with 250mls semi-skimmed milk, 5 prunes and 8g chia, preceded by 15g cheese. Have done several checks and bg rises very little from around 5.6 and back to there within 90 minutes. Max level observed 6.1. No meds involved.
