Is this normal

This morning.fbg 7.1. Reading before breakfast 8.6. Reading 2 hrs after 7.7. Same breakfast.What do you think?
As well as testing this meal a few times I’d want to see what my levels did without any breakfast in that time span and maybe with a low/non carb option.

It could be without the porridge they’d be an awful lot better still. The drop could be happening because the dawn phenomenon is wearing off and the porridge is in fact limiting how far it drops and giving the false impression you are ok with it. Another thing to do would be to test porridge at a different time of day to help eliminate or confirm this theory.

Honestly that is more expected. Blueberries do have carbs too. Try a bacon and egg’s breakfast tomorrow and see what happens.
Cant face that for breakfast.peanut butter on 1 slice of toast doesnt affect numbers much.could i have a small sliced apple with it? Or shall i just give in and take the gliclizde they want me to take?

Ultimately it’s up to you. But if you want to keep eating the carbs you will end up on the medications and have a greater risk of complications. That’s why they call it progressive when you deal with it purely by medication. Medication slows the progression and makes blood glucose look more normal, but the underlying issue of insulin resistance just gets worse and worse. That sounds really harsh but ultimately the only way to achieve normal levels without medication is by making changes.

There are other options touted but low carb is by far the eating style with the most science and most anecdotal support for long term success. Yes it means changing the way you eat. How much have you read about it? Do you understand that all carbs raise blood glucose. So that’s all bread, grains, cereals, flour, rice, pasta, starchy veg like potatoes of all types and colours and parsnips, even legumes (beans and lentils etc). most fruit has a fair amount too. Berries being the most reasonable option. How much and hair fast bgl rises might vary a bit and how well you personally can tolerate (or consider acceptable) is ….personal. But controlling how much of these things we eat is the single biggest thing we can do to effect out outcomes.

Thanks.i have been t2 for many years but didnt want more meds.made changes and got hba1c down from 71 in july to 51 in october.have next test in april so will see what happens.thanks for your advice.

As a type 2 myself your food choices are simply not on my menu - I have two meals a day, both of them non breakfast foods.
I had a tomato and tuna for my first meal, and it will probably be meat and stir fry for dinner.
It works for me, and I have normal numbers.

What did you do between July and October to lower it? Is a bit more of the same an option?

Are you saying they wanted you to take gliclizide at 51mmol hba1c in October ? That would be very unusual. They don’t even usually start on Metformin til 55 ish. At 71 it makes more sense

They wanted me on gliclizide at 71mmol.I wanted one more try( with metformin and linagliptin ) before adding another tablet.i cut out most of the rubbish and got to 51mmol

So almost at non diabetic levels. Well done.

A small extra push ditching a few of the higher carb items should get you there and possibly able to drop some medication if you’d prefer that.

We dont do we? But that doesn’t mean it’s not true.
Got more test strips today so will random test.cant afford to do every meal.fbg before gettin out of bed was 7. Pre breakfast 9.9! Had 2 eggs on 1 toast so will see what happens.

If you have limited strips ditch the morning fasted ones - for now. You can’t take any action as a result of those. It’s far more useful to do a pre and post meal and adjust that meal. Cutting out the bread would be my first step.

And the only way to attack that is to get the rest of the day under good control. It will likely take months or even years to be where you want it. But hba1c and the overall situation will improve much much faster than that. Days to weeks.
