What was your fasting blood glucose? (full on chat)

3.9 at 4.15 (woke to Libre yelling at me), had one of the emergency sweets and went back to sleep. 9.5 at 7.30 when I got up. 11.9 now - only tea so far today so maybe time for breakfast. Been busy, getting chores done while I felt able to do them but running out of steam now. More tea, breakfast and feet up time.

The thing is, I'm severely underweight and I'm not really sure what to do in this situation. I need to eat enough obviously and lowering carbs just makes me lose more weight. I can't afford that at the moment.
As for my meals, I eat "balanced" meals. When I eat carbs, I always make sure to pair them with enough protein and fat, and of course, fiber from mostly raw vegetables. I don't eat fruit or desserts whatsoever because I don't have a sweet tooth.
And I do get high readings even after my "balanced" meals.
Do you like cheese? Nuts? Olives, Pâté, Salami type meats? Seed mix? What about natural full fat greek yoghurt? Cream in your coffee? All tasty and few if any carbs. Should help with calories without adding carbs.
And yes. I too have to be careful not to lose too much weight as I exist naturally right on the line between normal and underweight.
Have you been able to see a dietician or nutritionist? I do hope your "balanced" meals are not based on the dreaded Eatwell Plate.

Hope today goes as you would wish. Yes, it is the Llŷn Peninsula with Nefyn the particular focus - Duffy anyone? MIL and JKP have very good local knowledge, we are taking a wheelchair and 3 6 foot 4 sons built like brick outhouses. I will keep an eye on them but what I see as common sense is anathema to those two. MIL is up and dressed a good 2-3 hrs earlier today :arghh:
Thanks Ian
The day went well, stress all gone now. It went just as I needed it to.

On way home I found a farm shop I had never seen before. It had never come up in Google search. So I went in, and it wasn't really a farm shop with different kind of things, it was just a butcher shop.

But then I realised from the smell that the meat smelt very decent kind of meat. Last few times I have been to my own local butcher's shop I've never been impressed with the quality of the meat he sold...

This shop was different it really did smell like freshly cut meat. There were no prices so I just took a chance and ordered a couple of lamb chops which looked very substantial, 2 kg of bacon, 1 kg of white cheddar cheese, one and a half kg of butter. It all came to £16. I have no idea how good a bargain I have got or I haven't got.

I just cooked the lamb chops for my dinner and they smelled beautiful when they were cooking and some nice juices came out of them and I didn't need to make a gravy.

The lamb chops from my local butcher just did not move me or excite me at all.

But these were heavenly, and just based on the lamb chops I am definitely going back to this (new to me) farm shop.

I like almost every kind of food (not a fussy eater), but I'm not too fond of nuts, seeds, olive oil, avocados... I'm indifferent towards fruits and sweet things like chocolates, cakes, cookies.... So I don't eat them. At all. I can live without fast food as well. Maybe like once a month, on social occassions it's enough for me.

I do like animal fats and all kinds of meat and dairy products and I include them in my daily menu.

My favorite type of food is... anything starchy to be honest. I love white rice, potatoes, all kinds of bread. I find it hard to eat enough if I don't include them in my meals. Too much fat and protein makes me too full too soon. Almost nauseous..

I still haven't seen a dietician, but I know I should (I have to)

Good morning everyone on another splendid start to the day here on The Gower. Yesterday was busses, benches and automobiles. A splendid drive over to Worms Head and Rhossili bay yesterday. A decent wander round even if there was a lot of sitting on benches for rests. Afternoon was a bit better and managed a nice long walk along the sea front although we did catch the bus back. Another bus trip this morning to a place called Clyne Gardens just this side of Swansea. Tapas bar tonight and as I have now tripped into middle age (70), I will be having some beer. Art bit, onwards and upwards. Hope your day is kind to you, I simply must go and make lofty.

Starchy foods can be so addictive but they really can also be the villain of the piece. I love bread, rice, potatoes, but I think that, after years trying to fight them off, I have discovered that I don't actually need them, or even like them very much, any more. If you can't stomach large enough meals of fat and protein, why not try more, smaller meals? You wouldn't then need to eat until you feel nauseous and/or too full. Maybe 3 small protein and veg meals with snacks of cheese, ham, smoked salmon or somesuch, in between.

Whatever you decide, good luck with all your efforts and well done for trying to work it out.

As a Prediabetic you can probably manage small amounts of your favourite starchy foods. The key to being healthy is discovering your personal tolerance. For me it's about 100g of carbs a day. Spread over two or three meals. So for me it's all about portion size. And resisting temptation. Unlike you I do enjoy sweet things and we have them in abundance in the house because my husband requires an almost opposite diet to mine.
I found the Carbs and Cals book very useful. Saved me from all the faffing about weighing i was doing. There is also an App.
In the past i suffered from IBS which was often triggered by fatty foods such as cheese and i had to very gradually increase the amount i was eating as my body adapted to a different diet.
I forgot to mention eggs. Anyway you fancy or scrambled with butter. Delicious and my go to breakfast for months as I struggled to regain lost weight.
Ask your doctor about a dietician or nutritionist. As you are already underweight they may be keen to find you some help with your diet.
Above all, don't panic oe give up. It is going to take some time to work out what is good for you, but you sound motivated and that's a great start.

Good morning everyone on day two of my 8th decade here on planet strange. Thank you for birthday wishes, much appreciated. We spent a good part of the day at Clyne Gardens which at this time of year is in full technicolour with all the exotics planted over the years amongst a huge canopy of trees. A bit like RHS Wisley forced into Westonbirt arboretum and then just gently looked after without too much Capability Brown. Perfect place to keep cool from the heat of the day. Tapas bar last night - very nice and after a supposedly nice, easy day, 8 miles on the Fitbit. Not all at once and interspersed by three bus journeys and a good deal of testing benched along the sea front and in amongst the trees. Art bit - wonder what’s next? Probably a bit of that castle in Mumbles. Have a smashing day if you can. Best make some lofty.

Good Morening Ladies and Gentlemen and those tip toed through the carefully nurtured tulips in their hob nailed boots while being shouted at by the gardener. Did you ever? Not so much! Whoops Nancy Sinatra crept in not Tina Turner. Never mind.

Blood sugars this morning were a 5.2 .

Here in Tilehurst Towers life should be peaceful for Mrs J this morning, hopefully me, me’s and myself will be out on the bike. While Mrs J sorts out what wives sort out.
This afternoon our eldest grandson will be earning a bit of pocket money gardening for Mrs J and me.

Now if you don’t mind I have to sort my motorcycle clothing and all the other parafinalia that goes with motorcycling in this day and age.

Shiny side up
Stay safe.

Looks almost cozy compared to your normal artworks. It's amazing to me how the added colour makes the whole thing so much more substantial. You really have a wonderful gift.

Libre woke me at 12.45 am to let me know my BG was 3.8. So - another of those emergency sweets and I went back to sleep. I'd only got into bed about 11.45 and it had taken longer than usual for me to drop off so getting up at that stage was just ridiculous. But by 2.30 I was so sore that I couldn't stay put and had to get up. I have never, as far as I know, screamed in my life (I was a very stoical child) but this morning I came close - it was the loudest, sharpest groan I have ever heard myself make! That axeman is back and having a go at my knees and hips. But the "cry" came when I was just telling myself that it was improving because my left knee was feeling like my arm did when I broke my elbow - stiff and sore but bearable. Then the axeman hit out again, my knee twisted and the stiffness was gone and the knee gave way. But I hung on to the worktop and just gave that involuntary cry. I had my alarm in my pocket, but didn't press it to call Neil - the worst was over by then and I got myself into the chair. Painkillers came to my aid. Unfortunately, I was just telling myself yesterday that doubling my dose of painkillers to twice a day (could go up to 4 if I want to be zonked out all the time) would have to stop and I would have to stick to once a day. Maybe tomorrow.

BG then was 8.9. It was 9.7 before breakfast and is 7.9 now. Not intending to move around too much today. That, in itself, is a bad idea though. I really need to move or I'll stiffen up completely. Heigh ho! Can't win. Not complaining though. It was my choice not to have surgery when it was offered - my priority at that time was my husband and I didn't want to take time out from caring for him. I knew it was a risk but thought it was one worth taking. No regrets, I would make the same choice again.

I was discussing with Alistair, building a multi bird nesting box and putting it amongst the trees for the starlings to nest in next year so that I can get new ventilation covers put into the holes in our overhanging roof. He told me a story he had heard on some radio programme about someone who had starlings nesting in their roof. It was an old roof and there was a hole which gave access to the birds. The home owner decided that the whole house had to be reroofed and so, at the next breedings season the birds came back to find that their former home had gone. The roof wasn't replaced for 2 years and the starlings found another nesting spot. In the third year the roof was on, there were no access holes and the starlings built their nest on the wall of the house, directly below where the hole used to be! They clearly have long memories. I'm not so sure that my nesting box idea will work now.
