Hi all
I got bad news today hba1c 54 , was 38 3 months ago , diabetic maculopathy , my whole family died horrible deaths in India from type 2 diabetes , I binge eat junk food when stressed , I am also on lithium and escitalopram for bipolar 1 disorder, I am 49 with wife and 2 kids , I am scared of early horrible painful death , Mathew Perry dead at 54 in jacuzzi from accidental drowning, I have never abused substance, I am just fat and lazy
A HbA1c of 54 is peanuts. Seriously, a lot of people here have come back from way worse. And they weren't all per definition people who were mentally in a good place either, yours truly included, so.... If we lot can do it, so can you.
https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html Have a read, it'll give you some basics... And a couple of things you should know: Carbs, which are a T2 diabetic's main problem, will demand more carbs. They're addictive by nature, and having them'll make you temporarily feel good. Bit of a roller coaster.
If you know you've got a problem eating a lot, try shifting to things that are good for you. Have those around in spades in the fridge. And no, I don't mean rabbit food per se, you don't have to live off of lettuce, but maybe make sure you have lots of hard cheeses around. Extra dark chocolate. Olives? Dunno if you do bacon, but, yay bacon? It feels lush and decadent, and none of that'll raise your blood sugars.
As for fat and lazy, I think that's a bit too easy with the blaming. Are you lazy,
really? Or are you just depressed and fatigued all the time? Because high blood sugars can make you feel bone tired before you're even out of bed, as can depression, and being high can mess with your emotional well-being as well. And you develop insulin resistance, which makes you put weight on. You don't get diabetes because you're big, you're big because you're diabetic. Common misconception, that.
Diabetes isn't going to kill you any time soon. With a HbA1c of 54, you can be back in the
normal range when they do another HbA1c, 3 to 6 months from now. You can control this. And you can stave off complications. You can be there for your family, and live to be a ripe old age.
You've got this.
