Weight is a strange thing

I am now well within a normal weight range, though I'd like to lose a little more. I don't weigh every day (that way lies madness) but I find it interesting how weight fluctuates apart from obvious reasons. Yesterday I weighed myself first thing, then had a busy morning with only a cup of black coffee until 1400. Then I thought just for scientific research, I'd see what I weighed. Mysteriously I'd put on almost a pound. Scale is extremely sensitive and seems to be in good working order. So how the devil did that happen?!

Note - I'm not in the least bothered, but in my calorie-fighting days it would have been a cause of much unhappiness. Today I have lost the stray pound, plus another. So if anyone reading this is floored by sudden weight gain for no good reason, this might cheer you up or at least cause a wry smile.

I think a lot of it is down to water retention , I weigh myself every day, its just part of my daily routine and it varies most days by 2 - 3 lbs , i'me a healthy 12 st 7 lbs so it doesn't really bother me .

Weight can vary quite a bit. I can vary by over a kilo, depending on "factors".

Whilst it contained zero calories, your cup of liquid will have weighed something, and you may have dressed, or something in the meantime.

I DO weigh myself every day, first thing, naked, after I empty my bladder. That gives me my most consistent baseline.

I weigh every day, because it varies, but always in my head I have a band of weight I am content is my "stable" weight. Frankly, I know if I have had a hungry day the day before and particularly if I have had a few more carbs than usual, my weight will be up. However, on the evenings we have omelette for our evening meal, I will always be at the lighter end of my range, irrespective of how big it is.

Weighing every day isn't for everyone, but, like testing blood glucose it gives an insight into trends.

(I never weigh during the day at home, but am sometimes weighed in clinic, when I go for various check-ups. Last week at my Endo appointment, late morning, I was weighed (and BP done). I had "gained" just over 2kg, but I'd also had breakfast, dressed and was weighed wearing shoes, which is their standard practise. They aren't interesting in the pounds and ounces, but whether one is a stable weight, or gaining/losing over time.)

I do not have diabetes
I stopped weighing because it would make nonsense of the overall trend, to my weight achievements.
One day I would feel thinner, but weighed more, The next, I felt bigger but weighed less.
When the overall trend was down, at the time.
Once a week, is just about right.

Were you wearing the same cloths? And using the same scales?

Me too. I found it helped me understand the weekly fluctuations more if I understood the daily ones.

I ate something that really didn't agree with me on Sunday. Sickness and diarrhoea all night. I only managed sips of water all day Monday and a couple of tiny morsels with slightly more drink on Tuesday. This morning I have gained 2 pounds! I guess it's water retention because of dehydration through not being able to drink enough but...

Back in the good old days, if I had any kind of tummy upset, as soon as the sickness stage was over (like maybe as soon as an hour after being sick) I would eat normally and feel fine within a couple of hours. Next day I would have lost at least a pound, if not 2. grrr

I know my weight can change wildly within the same day. Sometimes like 5-7 lbs. Not sure it's my scale but I do retain water in my legs so maybe that affects it.

Still weighing everyday isn't really meaningful.

As mentioned above weight can change dramatically within a day, it all depends on numerous factors such as how much food and fluid you have drunk, how much you have sweated, toilet habits etc ..... also higher carb tends to increase water retention to process.

I weigh roughly 70kg and can vary 2kg either way depending on what I have done that day, the previous day or eaten drunk that day or previous day. yu certainly would struggle to add constant weight of 2kg within a day.

was weighed wearing shoes, which is their standard practise.
One of my friends had to have monthly checkups (non-diabetes related) with a nurse during this past year. He went to the first appointment straight from work, the nurse insisted he keep his shoes on for the weigh in - great idea, if it wasn't for the fact he wears steel toe capped boots for work.

The next month, he wore lightweight trainers and was promptly congratulated on the weight loss in just a month! :hilarious:

I weigh on the last day of every month in my birthday suit, I used to weigh every day but it began feeding into my eating disorder so stopped,

Mentioning scales and weighing at the surgery, the last 3 times fully clothed with shoes on I have been 10lb lighter on the surgery scales. Obviously they insist that their scales are calibrated so I got mine calibrated too and it remained exactly the same so I’m putting it down to the surgery being on a hill therefore affected by altitude hahaha!

;)I'm one of those women who when I put make up on , it instantly disappears. It doesn't rub off on anything, I reckon it just seeps into my skin. Well 365 days a year for several decade must equal a lot of weight... doesn't it?

A certain friend was being assured at the surgery that their scales were 100% accurate, after being castigated for the weight she had apparently gained on the way to the appointment. She pointed out that she had several times seen staff using the scales to stand on in order to reach something higher up.

I weigh once a week now. I used to weigh everyday and sometimes twice a day with a gain of 3-4lbs by the evening! Depending on the reading it would affect my mood so I had to put a stop to it. It took a lot of effort to get out of the habit of everyday, I even got my daughter to hide the scales!
