Type 2 90 day review tomorrow afternoon.

Hi,
I was diagnosed type 2 in early September with a Hba1c of 49. I immediately started a low carb diet aiming to restrict intake to 50g per day. So far I have lost 15kg.
I had blood tests last week and have an appointment for my second review with the diabetic nurse tomorrow. can you guys give any advice regarding what questions I should be asking, apart from the obvious ‘ what is my Hb1ac now’?

‘ what is my Hb1ac now’?

That’s the obvious question. However I think you need to be prepared for what the nurse might say to/or ask you!
I’m pretty sure your HbA1c will have improved on 50g carbs/day, the nurse may not be an advocate of the low carb approach, so you’ll need to be able to stand firm on that. I expect you’ll receive other results too, particularly cholesterol which may be higher than she’d like if you’ve been eating more fat than before, but it’s common to get a higher result from losing weight. She might therefore want you to go on statins. There’s a lot of info for and against statins so you need to read up on it yourself. As you don’t have much time for that, I’d be inclined to say you’ll think about it.

Don't expect her to congratulate you on low carb. She may well disagree with it, as that's what they are paid to say.

You might get the same response I did. That it's not for the long term, "because diabetic patients have no backbone". In 7 years though, I've only properly fallen off the wagon when my mom passed away, and I don't think anyone can blame me for some emotional and convenient eating at that time, for little over a month. That's *seven years worth of backbone* I was supposed not to have. Don't get me wrong, your nurse may be entirely supportive. But it's rare. Don't believe the naysayers, it can be done. And if she applauds you and gets behind it, hold on to that nurse for dear life!

Your HbA1c is the main thing to enquire about, but if you think she'd be open to prescribing test stips for your meter, well... No harm in asking!
