Medical Review driving licence?

I have received a letter from the DVLA saying I must surrender my driving licence and be given a "Medical review licence". What does this mean as the explanation is very poor? Do all diabetics have to have this? It says it is reviewed every 3 years, what does that involve? Thanks, this feels like BS discrimination to me!

Hi @Vectian. Perfectly normal. We all have to adhere to this rule. It just has t keep being reapplied for. The main issue being hypo awareness.

If you are on insulin or some of the other blood-glucose lowering mediations (cant remember which ones exactly) they yes you will have a 3-year medical license.
I've been on those since I first got my license (in 92), just before the 3 years are up they send bunch of forms to fill out and send me a new one (I've done the last few online)

Not discrimination at all, they need to verify that people on blood-glucose lowering medications are safe to drive on the road as low blood sugar when driving is bad, very bad

I don’t drive so can’t help really but your info under your name says diet only, is this correct? If so I’ve never known any of my friends or family members who are T2 diet only controlled have any restrictions whatsoever on their license

It's complicated, I was put on insulin initially as they didn't know what type and blood tests take 6 weeks. At that time I was told you have to inform the DVLA and filled in a load of forms. I only took insulin for 4 weeks then stopped it, but because the DVLA take so long to process things they think I am still taking it. If you want to provide additional evidence you have to go through the diabetes centre, who aren't going to do that.

Ok thanks for the explanation- I suppose if you don’t want to have the 3 year license then you are going to have to do everything you can to provide them will the correct current information. They can only act on the info they have. Do still have a license to drive at the moment? If they aren’t revoking your license just telling you to renew in 3 years and you can still drive at this present time then hopefully you have plenty of time to sort it out.

Does it push the car insurance up as I suppose you have to say that you don't have a full UK licence?

No they want to revoke my current licence and you have to do it in 21 days. I explained on the forms that I may well not be taking insulin after the initial period but they don't have any flexibility in their procedures for things like that.

Nope it shouldn't effect the price, its still a full license per se just one that requires checking medically every 3 years - though if you drive HGV's a lot trickier I believe

Not 100% relevant, but the 3yr licences you have to keep renewing at age 70 and above are also 'full UK Licences', though only for 3yrs each.

I am on a 3 year medical restricted licence. I didn't have to surrender my licence, but I did have to have a driving assessment, which I passed with flying colours. The reason DVLA insisted I had a driving assessment was, I was undergoing chemotherapy and they wanted to assess my fitness to hold a HGV licence. I did lose my HGV entitlement.

Do you have to pay to renew it? If so and it has to be done 3 times in 10 years then you are paying 3 times as much as a normal licence?

Nope, completely free (apart from my time), all I have to do is fill in a bunch of questions

You do have a full licence as you have past a full test, it’s classed as medically restricted so it only lasts for or [emoji6] months this is so a medical review can be performed

And for me that has not increased insurance costs
