Type 1 Not sure what is going on with me worried about nerve damage from Dawn Phenomenon

Type of diabetes
Type 1
So I’ve been type one for about 16 years now my HBA1c has been between 5.5 and 6.5 but recently has been in the 7 -8 range as I’m struggling with morning highs around 18mmol I have tried to go low carb, high protein but nothing is working to get these sugars under control, my diabetic team are now looking at getting me on a pump since my basal insulin is not working (really bad hypos with extreme highs regardless of the dosage). This is one issue which I am worried is contributing to issues in my body now, so the first one is the other day I was injecting in my thigh but I have some lumps there, after the injection I noticed the skin felt off like when your arm goes to sleep, well fast forward three weeks now and no sensation as come back to the patch of skin around my thigh area, I was reading up on neuropathy and worried this is it, my hands and feet are fine and I have no issues with these areas plus my eyes are healthy so I’m told. I have some ED issues but not sure this is related to diabetes. It’s such so hard to know what I’m doing is right or wrong, I am due to see my doctor about the thigh issue as not sure if it is a pinched nerve from the injection or neuropathy starting. Any advice would be welcome or if anyone has had something similar.

Hi @ryan1990 your historical control sounds excellent and though your current levels are worse they still aren't that bad. To be honest I'd be surprised if you were getting neuropathy so soon and I'd also expect it to be in your hands and/or feet, not your thigh. However I have got some lumps in my thighs and stomach from overusing the sites there, though I don't think I've lost any feeling.

There are many many things that can cause issues in your body, not just diabetes. I know that it's easy to assume some sinister diabetic complication when anything happens but really I'd encourage you not to panic.

Good luck with your appointment.

Do those highs happen while you're still asleep or right after getting out of bed?
Have you tried injecting fast acting insulin to correct, or even prevent the high if you know it consistently happens every morning?

I'm the same, I've started taking my breakfast insulin as soon as I come downstairs. This is usually 3 units but I add 2 more for the morning rise.

I take my insulin but don't eat for at least half an hour. The insulin still hasn't even kicked in then. However it seems to stop it going above 14.

It's helping but still stubborn! Once I've eaten it takes about an hour before it starts to drop.

Not ideal but it's the best I've come up with atm. Hope this helps you
