Can anyone recommend the best / most accurate blood glucose monitor? There are many on the market and I simply want to buy the most reliable one.

Tagging @Rachox for you @CJ4190 . She has a list of available UK glucose monitors. I use a Contour Next One monitor. It’s the best one I’ve had . I rarely get a test strip failure, however, the strips are very expensive. I get my strips on prescription , but only so many then I have to pay.

Thanks for the tag @Melgar , hi @CJ4190 , here’s some info with links for UK meters, and to be clear I have no commercial connections with any of the companies mentioned.

HOME HEALTH have the Gluco Navii, which is a fairly new model and seems to be getting good reviews.

Links to the strips for future orders:

Then they sell the older SD Code Free, details to be found here!

SPIRIT HEALTHCARE have a meter called the Tee2 + which is quite popular:

The strips are to be found here:

If there is a choice of units of measurement then ‘mmol/L’ are the standard units in the UK, ‘mg/dl’ in the US, other countries may vary.

Don’t forget to check the box if you have diabetes so you can buy VAT free. (for all meters and strips)

Abbott usually offer a free 15 day trial of the Freestyle LIBRE 2 plus:

Sampling | Diabetes Care | Abbott

Dexcom also offer a free trial of their Dexcom ONE + here

In the UK they should all conform to the same standards for accuracy

And whilst some report slight variability especially with the cheaper units issued by the surgeries now they are tested to the same standard’s

NO glucose meter is 100% accurate there is a ‘margin of error’ as such tests from 2 meters from the same spot of blood can show slightly different results

You ask what’s the best, but this is an open ended question.. best quality? Best price? Best size?, Then there are other considerations like memory size

Personally I always liked the contour next range

Some like the accuchek mobile as its ‘all in one’

It also come down to if you are self funding or expecting the strips on the NHS as many surgeries will only prescribe certain test strips

Thank you very much for all this great information.

I've only ever used a Gluco RxQ, for about six years or so. I'm on my second. They cost nothing and the strips are still available and inexpensive. It does the job and I've never seen any need to upgrade to a more expensive (meter and strips) alternative.

No meter is perfectly accurate.

I have one that Bluetooths results to my phone, it is compact in size https://www.diabetes.ascensia.co.uk/products/contour-next-one-meter/

Contour range is nice, and results are consistent across meters, but the are not the cheapest to buy supplies for, and most surgeries won’t prescribe the strips due to cost with ‘special reason’

I qualified do to the large memory size, but DVLA has change to only needing to prove 4 weeks of records

The only reason I now get different to the surgery issued strips is that my meter pairs to my pump

Otherwise it’s what you are willing/able to buy and pay for… or what your gp practice will allow you to have
