being diabetic, struggling with food choices
Hi

I am a type 2 diabetic and am looking for a diet plan to lose weight, I joined a gym 2 months ago and have been doing cardio work only and have seen my weight increased by a stone, visited my diabetic nurse today and her advise was to not eat carbs with my evening meal, but this seems to contradict all the advise I have read. I am now more confused than ever I am a male and have a bmi of 38. Any and all advice is very welcome

You'll get as many diets as posters.
But, I believe no matter what diet, you need to eat less calories than you burn.
I went for a 800 to 1200 calorie diet, and lost 4 stone.

hi, welcome :)

exercise is a terrible way to lose weight, but a terrific way to get fit and lower your blood glucose levels

as douglas says we all have our own "best" diets, my own favourite is low carbing, basically reducing the amount of carbohydrates you consume, this means reducing your bread, rice, pasta and potatoes along with lots of other foods that contain high levels of carbs but its a massive subject, id suggest reading some forum posts, it will come up alot :) there are other options such as the low fat type diets and the portion control diets mediterranian etc etc non of which are right or wrong, it boils down to which will suit you, but id say between us we can suggest a diet that ill suit you

well done for trying, and getting into the exercise, great start, now we can try and help you shift a few pounds :)

Some people can gain weight if going from a more sedentary lifestyle to being much more active. There are a few reasons why but the main ones are gaining muscle and increasing food intake to fuel the workouts.
As Douglas said, it's not so much the diet ( although lowish carb intake will help with BG levels ) but the amount of calories. A lot of people assume that regular exercise will lose weight but it's often not the case. You have to consume less calories than you burn. That is the only answer. Why not keep a food diary for a couple of weeks ? You may actually be consuming more calories than you think. There is a good app called MyFitnessPal where you can enter all your food and it will total them up etc and you can set yourself a limit of 1400cals per day ( for example ). Good luck !

The current recommendation for a sustainable weight loss diet is to eat 500 calories less than your current TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) this will vary as you lose weight, there are a number of calculators for tdee on the internet. Personally I go quite a bit lower and currently eat about 1600 net cals for a tdee of 3200 (i exercise a lot). i would not advise going below 1200cals per day for an extended period of time as this has some side effects on your metabolism.

when going mad with the exercise the fitness pal app often added up my calories as -600 by lunch time hehe

Thanks guys just really confused about what to eat and what not to eat will keep a food diary and try the app and see what happens really want to get my weight down as current 20st 7lbs at 6' 6" would love the scales to show 18st 13" by Easter

If you use Myfitnesspal to calculate and log your calories it will give you a predicted weight loss. In my experience sometimes this is spot on, other times it is wildly optimistic. You will likely face plateaus, especially if you go too low on the calorie intake for too long, I've had to increase mine several times. Counterintuitive, but starvation mode is very real and can cause lasting damage to your metabolism.

I reckon at some stage it has to be worth trying the newcastle diet though.
I plan to get to my target weight, get stable, then next summer I may go for it.

ughhh :( if anything was ever going to put someone off losing weight its suggesting that mate, im not saying its a bad diet or inaffective but even being into weight loss if someone said all i could have is milkshakes id run a mile, that in my opinion takes some serious will power to even consider it, i take my hat off to people that do that

The newcastle diet is for extreme rapid weight loss surely, if you are already at your target weight why would you do that? Sorry, confused!

I do substitute one meal a day for a protein shake, otherwise I actually find it hard to get enough protein calories despite all the meat, fish and eggs I eat!

It's not really a weightloss diet in this context, although it's bound to be on that many calories,
But as to diabetes, if you remember Wargames, and if you remember the generals famous line -

"Goddammit, I'd **** on a spark plug if I thought it'd do any good!"

I figure it's got to be worth a try once.

Allegedly it has reversed diabetes, so I do intend to give it a shot for that alone, if it doesn't work, I can at least enjoy putting the weight back on!

i understood thatk the mechanism behind the reversal is the rapid reduction in body fat to a healthy level from an unhealthy level, if you have already reached that level not sure how that would work. Be interested to hear how that goes.

that makes as much sense to me as someone with a bmi of 18 having a gastric band fitted tbh

Actually that raises another important point - BMI is a very poor measure of body fat levels, depending on your body type you can be techically obese as measured by bmi while actually having very low body fat, think professional rugby players. Unless you are very average in build (i'm not) then you would be wise to buy a set of body fat calipers and get an accurate measurement (dont bother with those electronic scales, they are horribly innacurate).

i tried the scale in the gym 3 times, i was a different height each time and my body fat was insanely good hehe, so i chose to believe the tallest reading lol

Haha, tis good to beleive in something, I beleive in body fat calipers (£6 on amazon), the jackson and pollock body fat calculations and The Great Bear in the sky!
