Hi & BMI Question

Hi diagnosed just before Christmas and now beginning to plan to take things forward.

One thing is concerning me is weight, I appreciate I need to aim to get my BMI below 25, if I have my calculations correct it means I need to be between 9 ½ and 12 stone (I am 49 and about 5’10”).

About 4 years ago I was almost 19st I put in lots of effort (diet and regular exercise) and got down to 15st I am now back to 17, I am sure I can get to 15. Perhaps 14 but I can’t imagine sub 12.

Should sub 12 be a realistic target?

BMI is ridiculous it dosent take build into account so dont worry, i think its better to set yourself small targets that are achievable, look to lose a stone, then move on to the next goal

well done already for your resolve :) good luck

I'm a similar size, I'm aiming for 12..5 stones.
I was nearly 17, and I'm nearly there. It'll put my BMI at around 25 as well.
I'm not going lower, as I look fine now, and anything else I'm going to look too thin to look healthy.

A realistic target has to be one you can manage personally, and feel comfortable when you've got there.

lol i just noticed i have bmi in my signature, but i stand by what i said lol

BMI is a very poor measure, body fat measurement is far better as it's body fat we really need to be worried about, muscle is much heavier than fat and it's quite possible to be classed as obese via BMi measurement, but with a bodyfat percentage under 10%!

As several Forum Members have already stated BMI readings don't always give the true picture, for example 2 indivuals of the same height/weight would have the same BMI yet they could both differ depending on their bodies muscular/fat make up and it's distribution (Apples & Pears).
A much better and simpler approach is to use the Waist to Height ratio (W2Ht Ratio) which for most people (not babies) a ratio of 1/2, 0.5 or 50% is considered as the ideal and should be aimed for.
The Waist measurment shoud be taken with the individual relaxed (NO pulling in the stomach !!) and measured about 1" above the navel.

Dear All,
For those who might be intrested in the WHT Ratio Tables a simple table can be downloaded from:-
www.ashwell.uk.com/shapechart.pdf

WOMEN
• Ratio less than 0.35: Abnormally Slim to Underweight
• Ratio 0.35 to 0.42: Extremely Slim
• Ratio 0.42 to 0.46: Healthy
• Ratio 0.46 to 0.49: Healthy, Normal Weight
• Ratio 0.49 to 0.54: Overweight
• Ratio 0.54 to 0.58: Seriously Overweight
• Ratio over 0.58: Highly Obese

MEN
• Ratio less than 0.35: Abnormally Slim to Underweight
• Ratio 0.35 to 0.43: Extremely slim
• Ratio 0.43 to 0.46: Healthy
• Ratio 0.46 to 0.53: Healthy, Normal Weight
• Ratio 0.53 to 0.58: Overweight
• Ratio 0.58 to 0.63: Extremely Overweight/Obese
• Ratio over 0.63: Highly Obese

In simple terms the optimum WHtR is generally advised as being 1/2, 0.5 or 50% (all the same thing) and this is the recommended target to aim for, however for those of you intrested in WHtR my own independent research yielded some further details to the basic ranges (further complications ?) by introducing an AGE and SEX factor into the basic equation as well.

Male / Female Children & Adolescents Up to 15 Years Old
Waist to Height Ratio (WHtR) Category
Less than 0.34 Underweight
0.34 - 0.45 Slender & Healthy
0.46 - 0.51 Healthy
0.52 - 0.63 Obese (Class 1)
Greater than 0.63 Seriously Overweight

Female Adults and Female Adolescents 16 – 40 Years Old
Waist to Height Ratio (WHtR) Category
Less than 0.35 Abnormally Slim to Underweight
0.35 - 0.42 Extremely Slim
0.42 - 0.46 Slender & Healthy
0.46 - 0.49 Healthy
0.49 - 0.54 Overweight
0.54 - 0.58 Seriously Overweight
Greater than 0.58 Extremely Obese

Male Adults and Male Adolescents 16 – 40 Years Old
Waist to Height Ratio (WHtR) Category
Less than 0.35 Abnormally Slim to Underweight
0.35 - 0.43 Extremely Slim
0.43 - 0.46 Slender & Healthy
0.46 - 0.54 Healthy
0.54 - 0.58 Overweight
0.58 - 0.63 Seriously Overweight
Greater than 0.63 Extremely Obese

For Ages between 41 to 50 things now begin to get considerably more complex and above 50 years old it gets so complex that I myself had difficulty in establishing the tables, for it seemed that there was a different table for every year after 50 for both male and female so it might be best to stick with just the simple rules as outlined in the Ashwell Shape Chart which simply doesn’t take account of age or sex.

Hope this is useful
Best Regards to All - Lazybones

For your height and weight the NHS Calculator says at 12 stone you would have a BMI of 24.1. You can do that....I did. And I don't look gaunt and unhealthy. I look great. Cost a fortune in new cloths but hey its worth it. Sure it takes some work but once you know how it will come off.

Just wanted to mention that according to BMI measurements, the entire England Rugby Squad are clinically obese !

Supposedly one inch above your navel is the official measurement point.

Bone structure wise I am built like a rugby player (which indeed I was until my mid 20's). My BMI is in the high 25's but friends seem to think I am now too thin. Although I'm not noticably muscular, I'd look like a skeleton with a BMI of 24 as I'd have to lose muscle as well as fat to get there! Don't want to do that, I only just got my triceps and quads back.
