HGV Medical

Hello,

How strict are they with diabetes control? My consultant is more than happy to sign me off as safe, and I have the three months of readings... But how "in control" do you have to be, i.e. how strict are they when looking at the three months of readings? Do they just want to see monitoring and correct responding to readings, or are they looking for someone who's sugars are always 7? :)

I think you have crossed wires there, I had to inform DVLA that I was on gliclizide and Victoza and it was on file BUT when I had to go on to insulin I had my HGV revoked and will have to go through a lot of medicals and form filling to get it back and then it's not guaranteed

I'm t2 on insulin and if your on drugs that can cause hypo then you have to declare them by law. If your on metformin then you don't need to declare it to DVLA it doesn't work by type of diabetes but by medication. And if you manage to keep HGV you also have to declare it to employers insurance company. Other wise you won't be insured to drive

Yes you should keep it providing A you don't go on to insulin and B you test your blood as required by DVLA I think that is 45 mins before you start driving and every 2 hours whilst driving. But not sure about just being on metformin

I am T1 and on insulin and still have LGV livense. Have to renew it every 12 months and you need to attend medical with DVLA appointed doc. Bit of a pain but can be done.

Did you have licence revoked first though?

I was able to drive cars but not LGV until paperwork/medical sorted. It is a long process. I had to have medical with my own consultant and fill out paperwork but I still had to have another medical with DVLA appointed specialist because they don't consider your own consultant "independant". The nearest DVLA doc to me was well over an hours drive away. Hopefully, should be easier next time around. The medical wasn't easy either, I was questioned a lot on all DVLA guidelines regarding insulin/testing etc and he went through every single reading on my BG monitor for the last 3 months. Make sure you are aware of all DVLA rules prior to medical.

Did they say why ? Don't give up. Lots of hoops to jump through but if you give up, they win. Chase them up or fill out paperwork again ?

It's more down to hypo awareness I think, the trouble is due to me being on the sick for over a year now and new laws coming in this year I can't afford to even try to get it back

I never really had hypo awareness, most times I am in hypo when I realise what's happening and my partner notices it first as well as my mood changes and my eyes go funny(what she means by funny I'm not sure)

May or may not help but if you run your BG levels higher than normal for a
Couple of weeks your hypo awareness can return ?

I have read that here in other places as well, when I had my hb1ac done last month even though it was lower than before it's still quite high at 8.3.

Hi,
Sorry to hear you have lost your licence entitlement due to your hypo unawareness.
Have you tried other insulins? I seem to recall reading somewhere that the old insulins were better for folks having trouble with hypo awareness. I think you can get advice about this sort of thing from IDDT.
Hope you get it sorted.
Angie
