Mum is in a geriatric hospital to get help for her lungs and such. And she was served pasta for dinner! I am mad. She is diabetic, for God´s sake!

So I called them to ask about this and was told by a nurse their guide lines were to serve unsweetened desserts to diabetics. But potato mash and pasta are on the menu for all. I told them about what foods like pasta and mash do to my bg and that starch is worse than sugar bg wise for many diabetics. She promised to have a look at the recommendations.

I didn't ask about what kind butter or horror low-fat spread they serve.

I hope brother can bring her some cheese to nibble on when she can´t eat the food.

Hope they sort your mum's diet out soon. Mash and pasta is not much of an option !

Thanks Mo.
Yeah, well, she isn't served pasta with mash but it is bad enough to even consider serving food with that high content of carbs, not to say high in fast acting carbs, to diabetics in hospital who can´t choose what to eat. Made me absolutely livid.

I have since calmed down enough to email the person who is in charge of guidelines for diabetes at the National Board of Health and Welfare here in Sweden and ask what is recommended for elderly diabetics in hospital.

Diabetic or not, they would normally as far as I am aware give patients a choice of food.
Last time I was in hospital I had a choice of dinner, but not the pudding!!!

Exactly. You wouldn't feed someone with coeliac disease gluten when in hospital, so I can´t understand why they want to stuff her full of really fast acting carbs. I thought you were meant to mend in hospital, not be made sicker. OK if she doesn't get to choose her dinner so long as they don't feed her things that will make her even worse.

Are you able to visit? If so, can it not be added to her hospital notes? I would try and speak to someone in person as it's more difficult to turn someone away face to face.

No, I am stuck here on the island while she is in Stockholm but I did speak rather sternly with a nurse yesterday. And I will speak to them again again.

Your mum should be given a choice of foods though... Was it her choice to have that food?

Lycka till! Hope she gets better soon!
