Newly diagnosed and confused

Hi jim glad you are getting somehelp I have been on here for nearly 2 weeks DONT KNOW WHAT IM DOING WRONG ?? getting totally confused as to whrre I should be on this site TYPE 2 diet have left message ok reply but too many pages

Hi lesroses

I'm new here too, two weeks tomorrow, so we must have arrived around the same time. I'm T2 too and was very poorly when I stumbled across this place.

I've found it a very difficult site to navigate too but am now starting to find my way around using the "watch thread" option on the top right of the page. If you click on this, you get a prompt everytime someone replies either to your post or to one you are watching. You are notified either by email, if you choose that option or by a little green flag in your profile section. I find the emails unnecessary unless I want to monitor replies to the one and only thread I started since joining! As I log on here a couple of times a day, I find the green flag notification is enough. Click on that and it tells you who has replied and takes you directly to the post.

I no longer bother with the Home page but go straight to the "New Posts" tab on the menu bar at the top. That way you don't have to re-read old stuff but go directly to the new posts.

This is probably the blind leading the blind and hopefully someone more experienced will come along and show us a better way, but I hope this helps you for now

This is such a great forum that I wouldn't want you to miss all the help and advice which is available. My health has improved dramatically in just 2 weeks by following the advice here.and receiving encouragement from the seasoned members.

Good luck and Happy Wednesday!

Diana

Hi Diana (and Les).

I think you make a good point in that there is a certain presumption that everyone is familiar with internet forums to start with. I'm lucky in that I have used them for years and in fact I'm a moderator on another (hobby related) forum. But if you are already reeling from the diagnosis and then find the site difficult to navigate then I can see how it can be frustrating. The videos on the main page (pinned, i.e. fixed, near the top) go so far but perhaps some broader brush intro to how forums work might be of use for those less familiar with them. I think the site is well structured but can understand how it could be daunting to some.

Have a good look around, press buttons to see what they do (you're not going to break the internet), have a look at your own profile and preferences options (click on the avatar/icon top right on the red bar left of your name). I've disabled all my alerts for example - I don't want to be deluged with more emails especially if I'm looking on here a couple of times a day anyway.

(Hope I'm not hijacking your thread Jim).

Hi Jim, In answer to your question about pasta, the wholemeal variety is better than white (also applies to bread, rice etc) as it releases sugars more slowly, but I would try very small amounts to start with and test 2 hours afterwards to see how it affects your bg. We are all different and I find that carbs affect me quite a lot, for example some members have recommended burgen bread as it is very low in carbs, I had a cheese sandwich made with two very small slices and my bg was 10.5 after 2 hours, perhaps I should have only had one slice and put more topping on i.e. lettuce, tomatoe and cucumber. It really is trial and error to start with.

Hope this helps

Hi Jim,

9.2 is not too bad, but ideally should be below 8.5 after 2 hours. I am only guessing that it is probably the chips, I have had a few (about 6) chips tonight I am due to test in about half an hour to see if they have raised my bg!!! Tested before eating and was 5.0mmol/L.

Forgot to test at 11.22 - just tested and was 7.2 so I reckon it would have been about 9.2 an hour ago, so no more chips for me!!!

well done on the meter, it's going to be your best friend for a while
some T1 that insulin hypo may have a target of 10 and will say 9.2 is good for them, some will say it's bad and a lot don't want to spike higher than 8. at 1 hr and less at 2hr
given it was a BG on lasagne and chips/veg, I'd say you could aim to have your BG lower, as you know, normal is under 6.6 at 2hr and under 5.5 of a morning
The American College of Clinical Endocrinologists recommends that people with diabetes keep their blood sugars under 140 mg/dl (7.8 mmol/L) two hours after eating.

this is a good site to have a read of and this page is a 'how to' on food testing to see what spikes you
http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/14045524.php
when you test a food, some say at 1 hr then 2hr and to further confuse things pasta,/ pizza can spike 3-4 hours down the road because of the type of carb and fat/carb ratio

Hi thanks for the replies ...im just getting used to things and trying different food to see whats good and whats bad i have not eaten pasta since february any only had a handful of chips occasionally ...can anyone suggest what to have in place of chips would a few boiled potatoes be better i apologise if this is basic questions i have not seen anyone from my gp group since 1st feb although i have an appointment on tues
thanks Jim

Hi Jim,

Apparently swede chips are nice, if you search on this webside you will find some recipes. I haven't tried them myself yet but I am going too as they do look very nice and are also low carb. If you have boiled potatoes have new ones as the old ones are higher in starch.

Hope this helps

Marilyn

sounds like you like your spuds, you may be able to eat them cold or reheated a bit without spiking, have a search on resistant starch
but sadly you may find it's grain and starchy veg that has to go for a while

hi thanks for that i will give the swede chips a go ...ive been eating brown rice etc but was struggling to get something to replace the chip lol

Hi just a quick update .
had my first meeting with the dietician today and one of the first things she says its a waste of time and money testing your bg as type 2's dont have to she also told me that i can eat all carbs in moderation just not white bread .All my meals should have carbs in ..pasta is ok as is chips as long as i have a proper portion only things i have to avoid is chocolate, sweets, crisps, non diet fizzy juice.......on exercise i told her im at the gym at least 3 times a week ,golf twice a week just passed a fitness test with a vo2 max of 42 can run a 5 k in 32 mins ...not bad for a fifty year old man with two stone too lose for his ideal bmi...and she says thats good you need to build up your endurance now!! .....all i can say is thank goodness for the help and advice on here......has anybody else had a similar experience............Jim(confused.com) lol

Hi Jim,

I have been diagnosed since February this year and as yet I have not received any dietary advice at all. I have taken the advice of the experienced members on this Forum and followed a LCHF diet and I haven't felt so well in ages. Also, I was told by my DSN to test only once a week, but I have been testing before eating and 2 hours after and know exactly what spikes my Blood sugar levels, so I am able to avoid them. I had one buttered crumpet for breakfast the other morning and 2 hours after my bg was 11.5. We are all different and some people might be able to tolerate small amounts of carbohydrates, but without testing you will not know. I am still in the experimental stage so test before and after each meal regardless of what my DSN or my GP advises.

Marilyn
