Newly on Insulin - what to eat?

I was diagnosed type 2 in 2007 & until yesterday was on Metformin, Glicazide & Victoza injection. My reward for losing 9kgs was 'The Victoza is working too well you need to go onto insulin'. My question is: Do I need to eat differently? I try to cook everything from fresh & avoid obviously sugary things. I don't eat a lot of starchy carbs but was once told that with insulin I should have a portion of them with every meal? Is this true? I might be paranoid but I just feel as if all of the weight will pile back on now...

I follow a very unorthodox diabetes regimen: I always take pretty much exactly the same insulin each day.

So apart from anything else, I maintain an exceptionally stable weight. (I have been 11 stone for around 35 years; and I've been diabetic for 30 years.)

I have made quite a few postings relating to my insulin/food regimen. There are also details on my 'profile' page.

What insulin are you on, basal/bolus ? Do you carb count and inject accordingly or set amounts ? Anyway, you don't need a lot of starchy carbs with each meal. You can eat carbs if you like but the fewer you eat, the less you inject. There is no need to change your diet if you don't want to. You inject for what you eat, don't eat just to match the insulin. If you are able to reduce carbs, it will help with control as there is less margin for error. Well done for losing the 9kgs BTW :-)

Mo asks an important question,.because when you eat and the amount of carbs you may need to eat depends very much on this.
If you don't know the type of insulin(s), if you tell us the name it will help people to answer.

Thanks for the replies. The Insulin is called Lantus, does that help? I've been to take10g a day initially & keep o with the metformin.
I think I will carry on as I have been, avoiding the starch & keep a better check on my levels.

OK, that is a once a day background insulin. It would be wise to carry on with a reduced carb diet and test regulary. Good luck.

Yes, ignore the silly advice to have starchy carbs with every meal; nonsense. Just keep the carbs sensibly low as you have been. If you find blood sugar control becomes more difficult in the future a rapid insulin can be added to the daily one. It gives more control but means more injections and two insulins. Hopefully that won't be needed for quite a while.

Thanks so much everyone, I feel much better & less panicked now. I think joining this forum might be the best thing I've done:)
