Should diabetics have better knowledge of other types of diabetes

The "info on signature strip" discussion has been done before. I also believe it's a good idea but there were many who didn't and that's their choice. Although it is helpful, unless we all do it there will still be occasional confusion. Also, the problem with the mobile app still means much of the info available on the desktop version is not there to see on your phone.

I can understand members who want to keep their profile private but it would be helpful if they stated in their signature what type of diabetes they have it's easy enough to do, it may be an oversight by some but why anyone would not want members to know their type is beyond me.

Hi,

I haven't asked many questions myself but have read many many posts since diagnosis and personally I have found reading all posts and replies helpful, some have been overwhelming with technical (is that the right word?) knowledge that I felt slightly intimidated by and put me off posting myself but the more time I spend here the more comfortable I've become, I've kept an open mind and taken on board comments relevant to me but felt supported and lifted by others kindness in taking the time to respond. So I guess it depends what a person wants from a forum.

I was initially diagnoses type 2 until hospitalisation and turned out I was type 1. Currently basal/bolus but waiting for first appointment next month for the pump so I've visited all corners of the forum and found that just reading others post helps in the bigger picture of understanding my own journey.

Hi I'm a 30 year old male who has type1 diabetes.I was diagnosed 4 years ago and prior to that I knew diabetes was a serious illness that needed a good care plan and a great understanding about multiple daily injections(which I take also;novorapid quick acting insulin when eating and levemire at night slow acting insulin)I didn't expect tho to be also taking tablets for my thyroid not working and cholesterol tablets.I really need to learn more as my local hospital is not that good at diabetes after care

But they have been to university.

so have I.

But that still doesn't qualify me to talk about T2.

But if you want to know about upstream oil and gas production or safety in pharmaceutical manufacturing, I'm your man.

Exactly my point.
Our consultants would have studied type one diabetes wouldn't they so they would know about it.

I didn't say that every single person that went to uni knows about it!

It would make much more sense to put a person's Type instead of rankings like "Well Known Member" IMO.

All this time you've been on here and I didn't know this! I've spent quite a bit of my career in upstream oil and gas safety and now I work in pharma efficacy and safety.

Anyway, I'm digressing!...I've noticed that I can't tell by looking at someone's profile, which type they are. I generally only use the mobile website. It's definitely useful info to know what type a commenter is.

My old ex boss had a two Jack Russell Terriers.. One of which was an insulin dependant diabetic...
When it was diagnosed, he had no idea about diabetes other than what the vet had told him.. Which from my reckoning was not a lot.
So this female dog had to be injected once a day in the scuff of the neck. & BG level checking involved running round the large garden catching it's pee on a test strip.... It must have cost him a fortune..?!

Test results were not good...

One of the few employers to know I was actually T1 myself. (He's been the only one..!
Because of the bad pee test results the animal was due a review at the vets the following week.

So I went round & had a look at this procedure with the hound & studying the test result looked at the diet....
There was enough carb in the tin of what most people would call dog meat alone. Then there were a load of biscuits mixed in too..
Cutting the biscuit mix seemed to do a reasonable job...
I also taught him to look out for hypoglycaemia as well...

& I learned something too... Understanding our fellow creatures..

Sort of on topic...? Lol

Very off topic:

I had a diabetic rat once. Too small to be treated, I was told. Didn't know ANYTHING about diabetes in those days. Poor love. The knowledge I have now would have transformed her existence. :(

That's what kind of concerned me with the vets conclusion should that dog go back with bad consistent BG readings...?
My ex gaffer loved his dogs..

Still off topic I know. Sorry.. Animal diabetes is still valid I feel... Call me a hippy if you must..?

As a dog owning diabetic I have to admit that I have become curious about diabetes in animals and it's something I would like to understand a little more about when I've finally learned more about me.

You may find you understand yourself if you get to know a D animal...? I've seen a hypoglycaemic dog & a horse drunk on fermented apples...
But I sure never seen an elephant fly...!

I'm the same, I'm going to college in September to study veterinary nursing, I'm hoping to go on to specialise in animal diabetes :)

Ok then guys this is going to be a controversial on here. I have been reading this forum a lot and there is a lot of misinformation out there and I think we should all learn about diabetes as a disease not I'm type 1 or your only type 2, or you have diabetes coz you ate to much sweet stuff, or you can't eat that coz it will kill you, you have all seen different posts by different people, and until diabetics learn about diabetes on all parts how are non diabetics ever learn about this disease

Sorry Mo, my fault sidetracking the subject.. I don't even have a dog.. lol

My Dad was T2. i think all types on here bring something to the table regarding experiences & control of their particular form of diabetes.
I'm T1. & though my lifestyle & work balances may not the same as the next T1 user on this forum, hopefully it can help ?

As a diabetic kid. i felt like the "the only gay in the village".. There was no internet for me. all types i came in contact with were pretty much elderly with complications.. The only literature i had was a vague "Janet & John" book telling me to trust my doctor & not eat sweets.
At the age of 13 i snuck into a medical student lodgers room while she was out clubbing, & rifled through her books in the search for diabetes..

I appreciate this forum & the postings of all types.. I realize now that i still don't know it all...! .

There is some excellent advice coming from the sporty types on here which i'm particularly drawn to.
Though its a V long time since i have participated in a cross country run. ( i normally hung back with the slackers.)
Recent opportunities have arisen that require me to be on top form physically.. (One of which is an extensive European tour with four other Metal bands later in the year.) I can dodge the temptation of alcohol & "contraband" easy, but the diet side of things is what I'm dreading...I'll shut up now..!.
