Hi.....i'm trying to lose weight, i have Type 2 diabetes.
Does anyone know how many calories I should be aiming for and also carbs, protein sugar etc. Thanks :-)

Welcome to the forum.

A lot of the Type 2's on this forum have lost weight and controlled their blood glucose levels using a dietary regime called LCHF (low carb, high fat). The best explanation of the diet can be found at:

http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf

The added advantage of the diet is that normally you won't need to count calories, always a bonus!

I agree with Indy51. There is a low-carb diet forum - have a look at that as there is plenty of advice and also have a look at Vivs Modified Atkins Diet that is very similar.
The biggest problem with going low-carb IMO is that we have spent the past 40 years being told eat low calorie, low fat, and this way of eating has caused a lot of obesity and diabetes 2.
I am 61, weight issues all my life and I have recently started a low-carb diet which is actually being promoted by a NHS team of a dietitian and diabetic nurses. I have always shyed away from low-carb because I also have IBS and I have always found that soluble fiber (carbs) is good for the IBS.
You are in good company on this web site, have a good look around to equip yourself for your personal journey.

Jude, are you able to tell us the name of the forum?
I'd be interested in having a look at it :)

For me I did it my way:

1. At the start I ate very little and would stop eating about a mouthful after the hunger stopped and then persevere until next feeding time. This was only difficult for a couple for a few days and then it was easy. I also reduced the carbs I ate to quite low (probably about 60g/day) and because I wanted to lose weight did not replace this with fats. So I would class this as a low cal, low carb. I kept my protein at the same level. I kept this up for a month. Alongside this I added extra exercise to my regime. I would get up before breakfast and started with 10 mins and ended with 30 mins of running around the lounge on wii fit. I tracked my weight loss on it too. At this stage I was losing about 1 lb per day

2. After a month I did 2 things. I increased the intensity of my exercise and I increased the amount of carbs and fat I took in. I did this until my weight loss stabilised at about 2 lb per week. I now have about 150g of carbs per day. Eat chips and ice cream and still lose weight.

I just made this diet regime up between xmas and new year mainly out of desperation and the need to drop a lot of weight and get control of my bg levels and it has worked for me. I have been lucky in that I haven't found it too difficult

3. My next stage is to further increase my exercise levels (not for dieting purposes) to increase my fitness further

What I haven't worked out is what I do when I hit my target weight but I have a few months until that point

So the answer to how many calories is less that your body uses naturally and then you add a little exercise so you go down faster.

I think Jude is probably talking about the low carb section of this forum, though I could be wrong.

I had a look at that after I posted :)

I've managed to find one but it's mainly all about Atkins :(

I think the best site to explain the basics is the diet doctor:

http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf

The other resource from the diabetic viewpoint is Dr Bernstein's book.

It's definitely worthwhile watching all the videos on the diet doctor page as well.

Thanks everyone x
Hi maggie! I like Indy recommend low carb high fat. Don't be put off by the title. I have lost 1 stone 10lbs since 28th of jan this year. I lose about 2lbs a week. Are you on meds? You may feel dizzy with this diet for a couple of weeks. It does pass. Drink more than you would normally drink. You also might stay the same weight for a couple of weeks but then the weight loss continues. Typical breakfast: 1 or 2 sausages, poached egg, fried mushrooms and fried tomato. Sometimes I must have 1 sausage and an egg. Lunch: full fat Greek yoghurt with blueberries mixed in. Snack: pepparami or piece of cheese or handful of nuts Dinner: salmon/ chicken/steak with loads of greens and a cream sauce 1 square dark chocolate and a cup of coffee. Got used to same brekkie every day now. Sometimes have omelette made with eggs, cream and cheese. First few days you don't feel hungry but may crave sugar. Don't buy **** - if you don't have it in the house you can't eat it! Www.dietdoctor.com is the most popular health blog in Sweden and written by a doc who specialises in obesity and diabetes. Good luck!

Thank you, I've seen a few people post about this, I'll have a look.

I've been low ish carving since about October/November but properly off the sweets/chocolate/crisps since last August I've lost nearly three stone and two dress sizes. I don't really get hungry. And to make it even better my daughter, age 10, said the other day how she's do glad I've changed how I eat as she really loves all the food I make. I don't insist the rest of the family join in btw :)

Type 2 is not about dieting. It is about changing what you eat. If you cut the carbs and watch your portion size, then weight loss will be a side effect of getting better blood sugar levels.

 Hey you lot never mind Diet doc what about giving the url for our own low carb forum here EISH!!! Someone mentioned Viv's modified Atkins it is in the link l use that as my base eating plan and am on about 30 gram carbs a day.

I don't weigh l measure with fat callipers. Anyway l have gone from 28% body fat to 17% body fat on last measure. l wont have a problem about when l get down my body fat what will l do, l have 3 HUGE body fat sources that will take years to shift....my bum and my ermm ermm l know what l can describe it as, "my frontage x2"

New clothes needed but not bought as with weight loss l will soon need more and so not wasting money yet.

I think diet doctor gives a really clear explanation and rationale for eating LCHF. It is also written by a doc, who specialises in diabetes and obesity so you know that the info you are getting is coming from a medical professional. With the exception of southport GP, I do not know of any docs who post. I used dietdoctor to get an understanding and here for advice from other diabetics. And to share experiences, exchange jokes and for emotional support. This forum has been and continues to be a lifeline. Without it I would be lonely, scared, still morbidly obese, following the NHS advice and probably injecting within 2 years!

I find that I often end up on the diet doctor site too when I'm looking for low carb information. The other site that helped me a lot when I first started researching my diabetes was the phlaunt one and I ended up by buying Jenny Ruhl's Blood Sugar 101 book.

I too prefer diet doctor because a lot of the older style LC diets are full of processed meats - I prefer the real food version of LCHF. Also the basic information you need is all on one page, no searching around to find bits and pieces.
