I know the usual side effects associated with metformin.I have had none of those but my stomach has swollen considerably .My jeans don't fasten and my stomach is really hard.I have been taking 1 per day for the first 2 weeks and then 2 per day since last Thursday.Has anyone else experienced this?

are you using time release metformin (eg Glucophage SR)?

I can't find the empty box now..I just have my last strip ..just says metformin hydrochloride 500mg.The diabetic nurse didn't say anythinmg about time release.

Hi @choozysuzy

Yes, I've experienced the same since I've been low carbing. I've been on Metformin SR since January this year without any of the usual side effects, but as soon as I went LCHF I noticed swelling in my stomach. I also realised I was ......shhh...constipated. I think this is the cause of the swelling. Mine has eased slightly since increasing my intake of lemon in hot water when I wake and at bedtime. I use the juice of half a lemon squeezed into hot water morning and night and it is easing, though not gone away.

I read somewhere that low carbing can cause constipation. I don't know if anyone else has any tips?

Don't worry, I'm sure it is only temporary

Morning. Just read your text. I suffer with constipation. happened lately. Did not know that it was caused by low carbs. better increase the my carb intake. The reason for not eating too many carbs. I am on warafin. and it sometimes effects my results. have to watch K veg . and as my results have been good. never gave it another thought. I will try lemon/water. what we have to put up with. But it is nice to know that other people have problems and it can be shared. I have only joined this forum a few days ago, and have learnt quite a lot .As living in France the information is ok but getting to speak with someone who speaks English is so much better and everyone has been so helpful. it certainly informative.I learn something everyday

Bonjour ! @south711

I suppose any major change in eating will have an affect on the system temporarily. The hot water and lemon isn't an instant solution but does seem to gentlly relieve discomfort. I prefer natural remedies where possible, especially as we are already reluctantly taking so many prescribed medications.

Hope it helps. I'm glad you're finding this forum helpful and a little link with England

Hi there

I, too prefer more natural fixes when required and have stewed rhubarb and cream most days - it helps keeps things moving along and stops the bloating.
