Fallen off the wagon!

Hi all,

I'm still waiting to find out what type I am, so far 3 weeks! But nurse believes more likely T2 as Amaryl is reducing levels to around 8ish had a couple of good days when readings averaged 6 (started off at 27.8) But...... I fell off my sweet/sugar free diet spectacularly by wolfing down 4 Empire Biscuits, for those outside Scotland they are two pieces of shortbread, with jam in middle, icing on top etc etc. The readings haven't gone totally off the scale (13.8 ) but feel worse for doing it as it was murder to go cold turkey in the first place!

Just wanted to ask if apart from feeling like a klutz for doing it are "sugar binges" dangerous in the long/short term?

Any advice/kick up **** would be helpful!

Chris

Answer is yes. Long term mainly. Not sure what that medication is so there may be short term issues. But, surprisingly bread, rice, potatoes, and pasta, and similar are just as bad. And I never liked the cherry.

Don't worry, you can do it again. It isn't the end of the world.

Don't worry.

The success of LCHF diets are not about how strict you are(because often the stricter you are, the more likely you are to fall off the wagon).

The real success lies in being gentle with yourself when you (inevitably) binge, dusting yourself off and getting back into the saddle.

Every time I go back to low carb, it gets easier, as if my body remembers, and wants to get back to it.

You may have cravings, but just stuff yourself with yummy LCHF treats, and they soon disappear.

Thanks to you all, went on 20 min fairly fast walk and felt a bit better. I am also a recovering alcoholic, ex smoker, ex recreational drug user and this just seemed like another thing I have to give up, however I am blessed in that being sober I have a chance of staying healthy but drinking I wouldn't care.

Onwards and upwards as the man says and I dare say they're plenty of people who would swap diagnoses with me.

Hi. Going OTT too often will cause damage, so make them rarer events. Treat low-carbing as a permanent life-style change and preferably set yourself a max daily carb target. As you search the supermarket isles and learn to ignore the 90% that is rubbish food you will find the things that are OK and even learn to like them! 85% dark chocolate is one of those things. Eggs, bacon, meat, fish are all good. Veg is fine if you avoid cooked root veg. Some fruit is OK. We never buy biscuits to have in the house and rarely have cake.

Thanks, I wasn't sure about really dark choc so thats a plus!

It's only since I've been looking at food labeling more closely that I realised how much sugar (and other stuff) is in app healthy food.

I found reading food labels to be a real eye-opener because you realise just how little of what you were eating has any real nutrition in it! Now I don't find it at all difficult saying no to the stuff because I don't see it as real food. Just takes an attitude adjustment and you're already used to making those (from another ex smoker, ex drinker). Good luck with it ;)
