Hi Woody. Firstly, do you carb count ? If your levels are constantly high, your insulin is not enough to meet your intake of carbs. Two choices, reduce carbs or increase insulin. I would keep a detailed diary for a week or 2 first. Record all BG readings, carbs eaten, insulin taken and any exercise. With this info, you can either post here or discuss with your doc/DSN for advice.

cheers mo1905 i have tried everything inc not eating its just a nightmare pal and many thanks for replying

Nightmare Woody yep but with a bit of work, you can make life so much easier ! Good luck buddy ! Let us know how you get on :-)

Hi woody,

I'm type 2 treated with insulin, so not the same. But I had an episode between Sept and Dec last year where my bg kept going up and up, eventually hitting 18 and 20! I tried everything - nothing changed.

On 2 Dec, following a routine annual check, my Doc prescribed an antibiotic for a bladder infection. Five days later the bgs started to normalize. A month later they started to rise again. Another bladder infection and a different antibiotic - not such marked response but been moving down ever since.

Thats intersting notned. I've heard that gum/tooth disease can also raise bg. I had higher than normal bg this week and had to have some work on my tooth. My bg hss come down since.

does anyone have any references to this effect or similar experience?

Dr Bernstein's book goes into quite a lot of detail about the effect of "silent" infections, particularly dental, as a cause for unexplained high BG.

Have you checked your pens to make sure you are actually getting your insulin dose? Are your insulin cartridges ok, ie, have you been out in extreme heat or let them freeze by mistake? Are the needles ok that you are using?
Have you a hospital clinic/dsn you can call?
Have you also tried a different batch of insulin?
Another possibility is that you have had a long drawn out honeymoon period and you just need a lot more insulin now.
As already suggested basal testing is a must as well.
Most importantly though you need to be seen by a professional who can sit down with you and see what is going on.
Hope things soon improve for you.

Hi. Are you low-carbing? If your carbs are too high so will your insulin and so will your sugar swings. An earlier poster asked whether you are carb-counting? Let us know what sort of insulin approach you take and, yes, do check you Basal level first

You have to start by looking at your basal insulin, if that's out of sync you just end up chasing your tail, get that right then you can begin to look at your insulin-to-carb ratio's.

Oh yeah, forgot about Bernstein. I vaguely remember ut now. Probably skipped over it as my tooth was fine then.
