Good point, whilst I understand as diabetics we are classed as having a disability, in my mind if someone is disabled they are entitled to a blue badge. Weather your other disability is related to diabetes or not you get a blue badge. I wouldn't get a blue badge from being diabetic.

Blue badge holders are not just for those with a disability. They are for those who experience mobility problems, totally different. Nice idea though

No your not classed as disabled! As being a very sporty and active human being one person I look up to is Sir Steve Redgrave and he is a diabetic. Diabetes shouldn't stop you from doing anything you love. You could only be classed as disabled if you have other health problems due to your diabetes

A deaf person can run just fine, are they not disabled? What if they have a hearing aid, are they not disabled? People in wheelchairs play sports, are they not disabled? The definition of disability isn't just about whether someone is is able to move around unaided. Diabetes shouldn't stop you from doing anything you love, I agree but it can be a disadvantage, even if only a small one.

Well, not necessarily. Diabetes is classed as a disability but I would not be eligible for a Blue Badge as I have no mobility problems. That's not to say this would apply to all diabetics. There will be some who maybe struggle to walk or have unfortunately suffered amputations where mobility clearly is an issue.

re read and got it now lol. So you can be classed as disabled (diabetic or other) and not entitled to a badge. But ONLY if your disability causes mobility issues.

That's correct Brett. So, even though by law we have a disability, unless it affects your mobility, you won't get a badge. Having said that, I don't actually know what the mobility criteria is. Maybe someone else can help ?

I would never class myself as disabled from being diabetic, as many others wouldn't. always thought of disabled as someone with mobility problems, suppose they had to class it as something, under some act because there will be times when at work we need to treat a hypo or hyper that prevents employers taking.action against us, though tbh have treated and carried on straight after.

If you try applying online it gives the criteria. It also depends on your GP as they write to them to see if they will support your application. You can only get a blue badge if your mobility condition is considered permanent eg you can't get a badge for a broken leg that will heal eventually.

Sorry... To me, if you need help because you have severe health needs impacting on your abilities.. Then yes, apply for disability anything. It has to be severe though..
Anybody else is not to me disabled..

There are too many people getting disability or Carers allowances that really do not deserve them. I have lots of peoplearound my town that are just on the take..and it makes me angry when I looked after myself and I do know someone the same age etc, type 1 the same length of time as me.. And they are on every benefit... And I work... It is infuriating!!!

Its just wrong.. Our whole system of PIP AS IT's called nowadays is just wrong.

When somebody really needs help they have to fight like hell with appeals etc....

Others can send child benefits to external countries just because 1 member is living and working here!!

It's not easy, but at end of day Diabetes is NOT a disabling disease if the person with it has the tools and strips to manage it...
