I went to see the Diabetic nurse at local surgery yesterday I go twice a year , she told me they would like my sugar level to under 58 and mine was 49 which was good and do I want to come off the metformin im on. Have I got diabeties or what ??????

lol, you will always have diabetes, its just that with diet and exercise your current insulin production and resistance can cope normally, or at least that may be a possibility..........so you ca come off the medication and see if you can cope without it..........

you still have diabetes though.....

I would say...You are a diabetic who is diet and metformin controlled
Are you having side effects with the met?

Thank you both yes ive have some nasty side effects from Metformin even the slow realise Metformin

You could discuss a trial period of 3 months without the metformin and request another HbA1C to see how you're getting on. I agree with the others though, well controlled diabetes is not a cure :-)

If the met isn't ok and your bg is above normal when you are on a reduced carb diet you can live with. There are the next step up drugs.
See your dr and work out a plan

@jack412 - you seem fixated by ramping up medication for people. At least, that's my observation.

@Diann - according to this site, the threshold HbA1c for diabetes is 48, so your 49 is certainly in the very well controlled region.

I don't take any meds for my condition, and have been very fortunate to be able to achieve good numbers. I really appreciate not having to take tablets every day, and I want to stay that way. As @mo1905 suggests, you could agree a trial period meds free to see how you get along. Do you test at home?
