Just having a moan up .

I'm so grateful for the nhs and the things I get for my diabetes on the system .
But sometimes they make it so difficult , we didn't chose to have diabetes , yet to get supplies there making it very awkward . I feel like maybe I should buy my own supplies .

I put in a prescription for novo lantus test strips .
Before my nurse changed my bm meter over it wasn't a problem I was getting a box of 100 on prescription every two weeks , ( also trying for a baby soon ) so want to be my healthiest . Now there saying to me I'm not due any test strips as I was only given 50 , and also not due any novo . So now it's all a big palaver and theve got to speak to the doctor . How can they restrict novo !! I can understand test strips as I've read problems about getting them before .
I'm not very confident and hate dealing with all this , im not asking for these things to be funny or a pain , I need them to live !!
They moan if you have a bad hba1c , but yet are quick enough to say I'm not due anything ! So now got to ring back at four at see whats said .

Sorry lol

Ask to talk to the practice manager!!! and complain!! it's the receptionist's!!! They think they run the place!! lol

Hi. 100 strips every two weeks sounds a bit on the high side, so I can understand the query on those but for the insulin you would have to be injecting enormous shots to be using that much. Yes, talk to the practice manager.

Yes I am using Basel and bolus regime . And I am and have been adviced to do 7 bms a day . So works out 100 every two weeks like you said :)
Just annoyed me as all was running smoothly Untill Dsn had changed over my meter . I'm hoping they sort it out for me .

And as for my novo , no I wouldn't say I'm on large amounts of this , I've just put in my regular prescription as I'm running low now and need them . and it was questioned , which I didn't feel was fair , if you need insulin you need insulin .
But fingers crossed it will all be sorted out later when I go and pick it up if not will take the advice given and contact the practice manager .

:)

as you say they cant restrict your insulin, you need what you need and that's it...........

test strips also shouldn't be restricted, just get your diabetic team to write to the GP..........

cost of strips is a real world issue and different places have different budgets, but if they want to suggest a cheaper meter with cheaper sticks thats fine, but restricting them is wrong........what if your ill, driving a lot, going through a period of dose adjustment, there are many reasons, as you obviously know to why you need what you need...

a quiet word in the GPs ear should sort it out......

I get 200ml vials pretty much every 2 weeks....never been restricted for insulin, so I think what they are doing is disgusting! I did order once a week after and they just said you only ordered last week and I said yeah but I need alot of insulin....and they just did it!

Thank you so much for your reassurance .
The thing I find hard is that my diabetes team have already sent them in a letter and they have this . And it explains everything that they need to know on this letter . And have even rung my Dsn yet it's still a problem . My doctor is very nice it's just the receptionists they come across quiet nasty sometimes . So yes maybe that is the next step a quiet word to the doctor .
I can fully understand the cost of strips , and I would happily accept a cheaper meter , aslong as I could test I wouldn't mind . But like you said with restricting them , I turn up to get my prescription and there just not on there , no explanation nore phone call . Seems a bit silly.

But will have to get this sorted , just hope it isn't to much of a problem .

My own surgery receptionists have no dealings with the contents or number of items on it.........

I actually email my surgery with a list of items for example:

Novorapid Insulin Vials

Contour Next Test Strips

However, there is no item numbers requested, that is pre set, so for me, I get 2 vials and 2 pots of 50 strips, this can be changed though if you speak to the doctor..........worst case though is you will need to go more often for the strips......

the insulin though should be plentiful in supply.......when I was injecting Levemir and Novorapid Flexpens I got 2 boxes each, so 10 pens of each........I though that was acceptable.....

I like the sound of your surgery .

At the surgery I attend , it all goes through the receptionist then the doctor just checks and signs the prescription to what the receptionist have printed. So I can feel a doctors appointment coming on , just feel I'd waste their time , because it would all be ok if the receptionist where doing what the Dsn has adviced . Does get annoying as they don't really understand the full extent of why we need the things were asking for . Then they become funny and I hate those situations .

And again your surgery sounds brilliant and sounds very acceptable , I am only given one box of insulin at a time . So I'll have 5 novo and 5 lantus .

But talking on here I feel a bit more confident to go in and explain my needs again and why I'm asking for what I am .

Thank you
:):):)

basically that's what its all about, having the confidence to show up these silly woman at the front desk.............even my surgery has annoying receptionists and nurses who just seem to be in a bad mood all the time......

just talk about testing and injecting when your ill and for driving [even if you don't drive], currently checking for dose adjustment etc......

Maybe it's just our area Cloe.....hahaha!

I have repeat prescriptions going electronically to the chemist, however my insulin isn't on repeat because short acting will last about 3 months and the long acting i'm on my 2nd box of that so can cope with that. What i didn't know was you had to put request a prescription for your sharps box, i reckon that lasts 2 months, so i don't think they can do a 2 monthly repeat thing.

Would that make life easier for you perhaps. I do feel like i'm living at the chemist at the moment though.

My accue check mobile i think will be restricted you get 2 x 50 test cartridges and i'm down to 6 tests left until repeat comes in on 31 july (if it does) so am missing mid day test out to make it last which is ok.

But the DN said the test cartridges will be restricted to 50 a month in a couple of months. wouldn't mind i didn't choose the thing, might have to make a sweet talking phone call to the suppliers perhaps.

it is stupid i agree.

NOVORAPIDBOI26 : thank you for posting , your comments have really helped me , and also helped me on what to say . Really appreciate it .
I shall be putting all of this to use later , and see what happens from there . :)

NICOLA : yes maybe it is lol . o_O

BEV18 :
Hey , that is something I could think about setting up actually , I never knew that you could go electronically straight to the chemist .
I shall have to look up on this . Thank you .
Yes it is all madness the way things work , it's so hard because I am grateful for the nhs as I said above , but we didn't chose to have diabetes we don't actually want to go and have to keep ordering all the things we need too . But we have to too live and I hate all the confrontation , then they can complain about hba1c levels ect yet it's becoming harder to get the medication we need to do so. It's crazy .
Thank you for your help . :)

Hi,

I have an account online at my surgery to order my stuff.
There is a "dispensing chemist" on the surgery premises too..
Though I have a choice of about five other chemists if I wish to send the prescription to, I order what I need from the list on my account & the stuff is waiting for me at the chemist two days later to be picked up.... No questions asked.. Though I did phone reception up about ten minutes after I thought I'd stuffed up the online order when I first set this up & they were quite helpful....!

Hey ,
Thank you for your reply , that sounds brilliant how your surgery works and how helpful they were , and especially the no questioning .
I have heard quiet a few people say that they get it sent directly to the chemist . I may have to try and see what my surgery does and wether or not I could set something up like this .
Thank you for your reply .

In fairness.. Prior to the online account my paper prescriptions had a straight forward "tick a box on the stuff on your list & tick a chemist to send it to" approach on the "return slip".
There was a prescription drop box by reception in office hours, or just post it through a special slot in the door if closed..
The chemist had the stuff ready in three working days..!

That's how I am ordering my prescription at the moment , they have a little red box you post your prescription in , with the ticked boxes on what medication you need ect . But have not got the chemist option on this .
So all seems well , I go pick up my prescription and they do not put on what I have requested , when I ask for an explanation , they say you are not due this ect then they have to 'ask' the doctor who then issues the prescription anyway as I am due the medication .
So it's all a bit of a nightmare with my doctors at the moment . I hate feeling a pain , but I guess the receptionist are not making it any easier .
I'm going to go in there later and see what is said .

Mmmm. Sounds to me like an "admin" issue...
I can't recall an ordering problem with my surgery, ever..!

Your ticking the boxes clear enough...?
