How many carbs per day/per meal do you have?

Hi everyone.

Do any of you have any personal guidelines (or perhaps guidelines set out by a medical professional) about how many carbs to have per day or per meal?

I've been having roughly 50 to 60g of carbs per day. I know that different people have different spikings of blood sugar but what works for you?

I don't particularly count them now either.
I used to, but only as a calorie counting exercise for portion control.

Everyone has different tolerance levels to carbs, so out of 10 people you will find 10 different answers.

I stick to an average of between 60 and 65g a day but no more than 25g at one meal.

Hi @KittyKatty when I was bringing my BG levels and weight under control I had between 60 and 100. I then moved up to around 120-150g as part of my period of slowing down my weight loss and I am now on about 250g. I am on quite a lot of carbs now which is unusual for someone with a low HbA1c

I'm in a similar position to @Andrew Colvin in that my carb levels are now between 150 and 200 grams per day. My meter seems happy with this as does my most recent HbA1c. I suspect I'm probably eating on the high side protein wise, but it doesn't seem to be having too much of an impact on my test results.

Hi. As others have said, it will depend on what your meter says. Anything above 200gm/day might be considered quite high for a T2 diabetic and many would be unable to keep BS under control. Quite a few go down to 50gm/day. If it was me I would start at 150gm and move it up or down depending on meter readings over several days? BTW I think you will find few HCPs who will say carbs need controlling for diabetics let alone setting a guide level.

This is the thing. I guess the real emphasis should be on how many carbs per meal one has, as a certain carb level will be reached where the pancreas can't cope, only for it to "recover" a couple of hours later.

I eat zero for breakfast and less than 10g for lunch but 20-30 for dinner and I have the odd carby snack like a banana mid morning.

I'm currently on no more than 5g quick release carbs a meal.
But I can add slow release carbs (green veg, protein, nuts, etc.) to that.

I wouldn't like to say a total figure, but I can say that only having carbs with meals (never with snacks) and spreading them out in tiny portions throughout the day is working like a charm.

If you use a meter, testing before & after meals should help you work out how many carbs you can manage, which is the only relevant measure! If you've got your Hba1c down from 97 to 33 in just a few months you're obviously on the right track.

My avarage for carbs a day is about 100. I tend to have a low carb breakfast and lunch and a normal carb evening meal but I always follow it with a 10 mile bike ride to burn them off. Works for me :-)

Diagnosed mid May this year, decided early June to go LCMF to assist with BG levels and weight loss.

Have kept a food diary since Mid June but never really looked at the actual breakdown of carbs etc, just ensured I was low carb, your post has got me to have a look , my personal levels for the last week and pretty much the whole period have been below 60g per day, most days below fifty. Weight loss have stalled at 12st 2lbs for last 3 weeks total loss nearly 3 stone so far , my personal target 11 & 1/2 stone I should add I am 5'10" so getting there.

80 -120g a day for me, 20 - 30g each for breakfast and lunch, and 30 - 50g for tea.

I am definitely finding that it is not only the amount of carbs but the type that effects me as well. I still have some ready meals but always make sure that they have less than 50g carbs per pack, the odd one I have noticed is that as far as pasta goes, Taggliatelle I am fine with but Penne pasta sends me high, the current theory is that there is something in the sauce to thicken it more for Penne and that is what sends me high not the actual pasta.
