Hi. I'm 33 and up until recently, half a stone over weight. That half a stone has now disappeared but not in a good way. I was diagnosed with type 2 a month ago. It was a shock because I have a healthy diet and I'm currently drinking less alcohol than I have ever drank. Not even one bottle of wine a week most of the time. But type 2 is in the family and I have carried extra belly fat for most of my life so this is my reality and I'm trying hard to accept it.

The metformin tablets make me feel sick, pretty much all the time. I was put on 3 a day after a blood sugar reading of 135. It was down to 15.3 after a week. My appetite has basically disappeared although I do find it easier to eat during the day. My biggest problem is the dry mouth. I can handle it during the day but it wakes me up at least times during the night. I dream about it and talk with a lisp in my dreams.

I sleep with water next to the bed but it doesn't touch it. I went back to the doctors but that was a waste of time. I've started munching on cherry tomatoes during the night instead because that seems to offer a little extra relief but not much. The lack of sleep combined with a loss of appetite means I am looking worn, rough and I don't have the energy to play squash, cycle or swim. All the things I usually do. Could anyone offer any suggestions please?

Hi, The poet, and welcome to the forum.
This does sound like the side effect of certain medication.
It is a shame you Doctor makes you feel it is a waste of time without explanation.
Might be best to return to your Doctor in the view to obtain a little more professional advice regarding your dry mouth.

All he has to say is, "Steve Redgrave has diabetes, look what he's achieved." I kid you not, that is his advice.

Ask your doctor for slow release metformin its much kinder. Often as well people get a dry mouth when their bg readings are high. Are you drinking enough in the day.?

My diet was good but now it's even better so I don't think my readings are high. Will buy one of the testers soon so I can keep track of it. Drinking plenty, herbal tea, water, fruit juice with sparkling water. Maybe it's just a case of settling down and getting use to it. Will mention the slow release metformin when I go back. thanks

I would laugh but my lips are stuck to my teeth!
Sorry but have got me laughing.:D
Ask your doctor if you can have the same expensive treatment that Sir Steve gets.
Just found this: Metformin tablets, Common side effects may include: nausea, drowsiness, dry mouth and headache.
With a bit of luck and your good sense of humor it may just self sort itself out quicker than you think.

Yes, go for Metformin SR. Also note that Metformin is an appetite suppressant so don't be surprised if your appetite has gone down a bit. If you find you have a metallic taste when you eat that is also a Metformin side effect which does eventually go.

I had a very bad dry mouth when my sugar was high .. Long before I started the meds. There are dry mouth sprays that worked ok for me (lemon flavour) .. But the cheapest way to find relief was just a normal breath fresh spray from the local supermarket. I used to keep it by the bed and use it three or four times a night. Now my sugars are normal I no longer have a dry mouth ... Hope this helps

Edit to add ... When I got my dry mouth sorted out my appetite returned.
Also, I am vegetarian and not all the sprays are veggie.

Boots do a BRILLIANT "dental dry mouth spray", I was advised to try it by a lovely member here and it made such a difference! Only £2.99 too, and of course, safe for us diabetics ; )
