Pump availability

I went on DAFNE course in Feb with 10 other T1's who all wanted to go on a pump. We are all still waiting despite being approved by specialist. Now being told that the pump specialist has left and they are not replacing him until early next year. Anyone else had issues getting a pump and any suggestions to get things moving?

did the a specialist/consultant approve the pump applications officially...........once that has been done the process should be moving.....

for me, a 4 year battle to get down below 8% had failed despite trying all sorts of weird and wonderful strategies which I had proved to my consultants.......fortunately there was funding put in place by the Scottish government specifically for pumps as Scotland was dragging behind in pump supply with the rest of the UK...........6 months it took from my consultants say YES to getting my appointment at the pump clinic.....[my clinic didn't do them yet].....

I would keep mentioning it to the nurses.........if the approval has been given, then the nurses should be able to see it through without the consultant as its usually the nurses who will train you up anyway....

Yes all approved, nurses did say I could be referred to a different hospital where they have a specialist available only issue is that it is 30 miles away aaaarrrghhh!

Hospitals do prefer to have a specialist in pumps before giving them to people so it may be worth considering that 30 mile trip. I do 30 mile to my hospital. If you have good training and good help from others, you don't have to have too many visits. Especially if you go straight on to the pump with insulin rather than saline and arrange phonecalls instead of drive to hospitals.

I think I will prob end up travelling to other hosp may give my current clinic a month or two and if no progress I will ask to be referred. I am trying to get my hba1c right down but too close to hypo all the time unless I snack constantly or do not do too much exercise - guess that is the limitations of mdi regime! Thanks everyone for your feedback :-)
