Just had 1st visit to Diabetic nurse

I have porridge with either fruit or almonds and honey for breakfast , a mid morning snack of cashew nuts and cheese , lunch of salad and meat or cheese , dinner of lots of veg and meat small amount of potato, some 80% coco chocolate if I fancy it or a dessert of some description , always use skimmed milk , tend to drink black coffee and any zero drinks or no added sugar squash , there's lots of no added sugar products to choose from , I don't like fruit so eat very little of it , my nurse Sid it was good as fruit has different sugars
Bad nurse naughty nurse. Sugar is sugar is carbohydrate.

Yes it does sound contrary to normal dietary advice......but I can tell you that if you follow the low carb high fat and measure your sugars on waking then 1 and2 hrs after dinner you will take back control of how you feel and be rid of a lot of the worries that can arise if we do not! You will notice what gives you high results and what is ok and then adjust accordingly, I have lost 30 lbs now and am a lot happier, persevere you will reap the rewards!

Bananas are not good for us so that was bad advice. I do have the occasional one but am aware of the high-GI carb content

Bananas are high carb.

Bananas convert to glucose the second they are in your mouth, which is why athletes eat them during competitions, especially tennis players between sets. Instant energy.

As said earlier, don't look at the "of which sugars" amount. It is the Total carbs amount that is important. Whole milk has less carbs than skimmed or semi skimmed because those last 2 have sugar added to replace the fats. Fats have no carbs. Many low fat products have added sugar to make them more palatable. You have to read the labels very carefully.

Thank you all for your helpful replies (which for some reason are only just all showing up on my screen!). I'm wondering if I ought to stop the diet shake that I have for breakfast. When I read on the carton under Carbohydrates, the 'of which sugars' part was not much less than the carbohydrates itself. It's made with skimmed milk, and I only drink skimmed milk and use skimmed milk in my tea.

I find it confusing that I am now being told to eat things I've previously been told not to, such as cheese, full cream milk and things that are low carb/high fat. The Diabetic Nurse told me I was ok to eat Bananas but to avoid things like grapes as they were too sweet. I find it all so confusing. :(
to make it less confusing...it's the opposite to what the nurse told you..she said eat carbs dont eat fat..I'm saying eat fat don't eat carbs :)
and no fruit as fructose is bad for a T2 because we alreay have 10 times what a normal person produces from glucose... polyol pathway www.youtube.com/watch?v=KybOPCB2Qd4
