Hi all.

I have a bit of a problem.

My parents don't seem to support me or help me with my diabetes. My siblings are the same. They just seem to act like everything is normal but when I want/need help then I don't feel like I can ask them anything. If they do give me support and guidance it's no help. They just don't understand it from my point of view.

I try talking to my healthcare team but they are not easy to get access to talk to. My parents also don't like some members of my health team and think I'm wasting my time seeing them.

It's getting the point where I have no one to turn to and I'm now beginning to struggle on my own. I'm hoping someone will have an answer for me as it's becoming difficult to bear sometimes. I can't just sit them down and talk to them because they just don't listen and they won't listen to my healthcare team either.

Someone please help :(

What is it you feel like you need help/support with hun? From reading your other posts your 17 years old? As an adult it is up to your who you see/speak to on your health care team, why do your parents not like your HCT? Are you siblings older or younger? X

You can see your healthcare team by yourself.

Your parents don't need to be included, especially if they impose their feelings about them on you.

If you are indeed 17, you will soon officially be an adult... So you can start the ball rolling now.

Do you find the whole diabetes side of things difficult to handle? Are your readings within normal ranges or are you struggling with them?

I was diagnosed at 16 and never had any support or understanding of condition from parents, I think they were and still are scared to learn about it. I have always felt it was my problem to deal with and indeed it is. I have always met specialist and nurses on my own and they have always given me support when asked. It is good to get on DAFNE course as well as you meet some other T1's and this forum is always good for support. In my case parents were the older generation having kids of my own I would want to know everything!

They think that I'm wasting my time with my HCT and that they aren't doing anything for me. My siblings are all older than me.

I just find that I can't accept the fact I have the disease and I just want to feel that I have support around me everyday which isn't happening right now.

How is your relationship with your parents and siblings generally - is it just diabetes they aren't interested in or is it everything you do?
Perhaps they are worried that you will think they are trying to interfere too much?

Could you try and talk to one of them - pick the one you think will be most likely to listen and tell them you are struggling?

Support in what aspect??

Is it because say, you have to test n inject before meals and parents/siblings don't appreciate that fact?

Or is it that you been told that you have to have a restricted diet (which you don't)? Or going out with friends, and them doing what they want to but you been told you can't?

Is it support just relating to diabetes or more?

Support in helping me through the tougher days when things are not as easy as other days and just generally helping me with my diabetes.

Hi how old are you, a child, teenager, young adult ? I am sorry to hear of your problems, we all need support from our loved ones, diabetes can feel like a burden or the end of a normal for some people, and type 1 can be a hard slog at times. Is there anything that you really need to say or ask, a good way might be to write a little letter explaining how you really feel and leave it in a place it would be seen ? as it can be so horrible to feel alone and invisible.

Take good care

RRB :)

We don't have a close relationship anymore. I don't feel like I can talk to them about anything. I don't feel like I have that trust as they wont understand or they will just have a go at me.

Where do you live? Town - NOT address or post code. Members are all over the country & you may be able to link up with someone for support.

Have you been on the DAPHNE course? It not, ask. There you should meet up with others.
When I was diagnosed (type 2) I was advised to get to know the local pharmacist who would be more accessible that others in the team.

Unfortunately I live on an island so the majority of Type 1's are children and babies.

I have been on the DAFNE course for a couple of years now.
