Morning guys have had a really bad nights sleep! Up and down all night needing the toilet and in and out of the kitchen getting water :( tested about an hour ago and I was 25.6 with ketones dark red on the colour chart (using ketostix) have taken correction and am drinking plenty of water. Don't understand why I'm so high as I was 10.9 before bed (about 11pm) and I'd eaten at tea time a chicken wrap and yoghurt to follow :(

Hope you're all ok, thank you for "listening" :) xx

I am not t1 and I am not on insulin.
25,6with ketones sounds extremely high and you may need to consider going to the nearest A&E if they do not come down soon.

Are you on your own or is there someone with you that can drive you.

Hi Sax daft question I know, but did you forget either your bolus or basal insulin by mistake. Or is there a chance one of your pens isn't working? Hope you are feeling better very soon. Please keep an eye on your ketones and if still high and feeling ill ask for medical help

I feel much better in myself, mouth isn't so dry and headache has subsided etc etc, had a bit of a cry too. I think it's one of those days at the moment. Just tested and I am now 10.4 :)

Thank you for your advice :)

I have been using the same insulin (humalog) since I was diagnosed 18 years ago but 2 years ago I moved onto levemir as I do a lot of sport and humalog again albeit a different make of humalog so do you think I might have become so used to humalog that it's becoming ineffective?

Not if last night was just a one-off, we all get times where we can't figure out why bg levels have shot up high, however if your high levels are a common occurrence then it's worth looking into changing insulins if you feel that it's not giving you a good level of control.

Ahh ok thanks. I may still ask at my next appointment anyway. But I usually run between 10-16 which is high but this occurrence is just one of those random things, especially with such high ketone readings.

Aawww, so sorry to hear you are feeling a bit rough, 25.6 is very high. Just keep testing to try and gradually bring it down, but you do seem to be doing the right things.. You may have a bug or viral infection in your system. Please let us know how you get on today and hoping you feel much better very soon. If it gets any worse.......... ring 111 or go to A & E.
Take care RRB :)

Hi. It sounds like you are normally running your blood suagr a bit too high. I always try to stay below 10mmol but sometimes fail. Do you carb count? Have you checked that your Levemir dose is about right to keep your blood sugar roughly stable without any Humalog and food for a test period?

That is high and not good in the short or long-term, I would speak with your diabetes team and seek advice with a view to getting your bg levels lower.

However for now the first thing you should do is get your basal insulin dose right otherwise everything else fails, do some fasting basal checks as described in the following and see how you get on, after that you will need to look at your I:C ratio's, if you do think that Humalog isn't working for you then ask to go on Novorapid or Apidra, alternatively if you can't get your diabetes under control despite your best efforts ask about going on an insulin pump.

You mention that you do a lot of sport. Are you deliverately running high to avoid drops during exercise?

If so, then perhaps you could talk to your consultant about a pump. I was quite amazed at how effective it is at helping prevent those exercise induced hypos. If I turn the basal down about an hour before a short easy 8-10km run then my BG is essentially stable and I don't need to eat. Longer runs/rides I treat as normal.

On MDI, I essentially need to either delay exercise, eat more during, or reduce bolus and run high as a consequence.

No not deliberately running high it's just that's where they seem to favour at the moment. My target mmol is 10 so generally I try to aim for that but obviously anything under is a bonus. I carb count so am (along with my diabetes specialist) working out ratios etc.

I was more annoyed at how high they were this morning and the ketones rather than worried, I suppose at the moment I am "under construction" :)

I hope that they have stayed under control compared to what they were earlier today @Seriously_Sax1989

If they remain high you are probably coming down with something.

Might have just been one of those random highs. I had one the other night and I spend most of the night waking up to make sure they were responding to corrections.

Hey all :) sorry not kept you informed as I said I would but... I am lifestyle changing at the mo like I said "under construction" I am swimming every other day and using the gym days in between. I've also cracked out my low carb cookery book and have made some fantastic meals with my boyfriend and seriously what a difference it has made.

I have also increased my levemir by 2 units both morning and night. My levels now have been no higher than 16.0 and average around 8-9 :) also no ketones!

It seems like a lot of exercise but I am actually really enjoying it and I feel so much more awake even though at the mo I ache like hell as it's only the first week!

Xx
