Novamix30 users question.....

Hi everyone :-)

I would be interested to know if any other users of Novamix30 ever sneak in an extra 'small' injection at lunch time if they have high levels? Having spoken to my nurse she has explained to me the reason why you shouldn't do this, due to long and short release being combined, so I get that.

I am aware that on other insulin you have more flexibility, but I don't really want to change at this stage as have only been type 1 for a year and a half and am still a bit needle phobic. Novamix30 works perfectly well for me 90% of the time, so I don't really want to change. It is only on the rare planned lunches that I can't change - Xmas lunch, lunch out with colleagues, family Sunday roasts, etc that can cause me a problem.

My latest HbA1C result was 50, my general daily readings are between 5-10, so I do feel I have good overall control, I just get frustrated with those occasional lunchtimes which I can see coming up on the calendar and which I can't change.

Thanks :-)

I used Humalog Mix 25/75 for many years before changing to MDI and there were occasions when I eat more carb at lunvhtime at restaurants due to my job but as this was only a weekly thing, my consultant prescribed Humalog bolus to use as a backup so for every 10g carb extra to my usual czrb allowance of 30g, I just injected 1u of Humalog. This worked fairly well and allowed me the flexibility when I needed it. I had the best of both worlds......2 jabs most of the time. Dont see why you coulfnt also use a bolus as a backup for special occasions.

Agree with iHs, ask about introducing another insulin such as Humalog, Novorapid or Apidra for such occasions, your DSN will discuss the pro's & con's to you. If you do just take note when you start the insulin cartridge, as it's unlikely you'll use the whole cartridge up and will need to replace it every 4 weeks.

What I used to do, is take the cartridge out of the Lilly pen when I didn't need it and store it back in the fridge. I then just took it out and put it back in the pen and just sdvanced the piston again so that some insulin came out of the needle so that way, the cartridge lasted a while

Thank you very much for your replies. I am seeing my consultant in January so I shall ask about the option of an extra insulin e.g Humalog/Novorapid/Apidra. The less injections the better as far as I am concerned (- but not mentally ready to consider a pump yet)

Hi. I'm on Basal/Bolus but normally only have 3 injections i.e. one more than you currently have. I don't split the Basal and don't use Bolus for breakfast as the carbs are low. If you can tolerate 3 injections per day then this approach would give you the flexibility and control you need.

ive been topping up at lunch for around 6 weeks now and i have gone from 16units at breakfast to 28 and 16 at dinner to 38, and my readings are out of control breakfast ones are ok 8-11, but go to 12-17 at dinner so i top up but then cos the slow acting kicks in i can go hypo before tea. i have been on novamix30 around 6 years and i just cant control it at the min. so im seening consultant next month to see about getting seperate fast and slow acting insulin.
