Type 2's: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning?

Great that you have a great practice nurse (DN). My DN at the practice never told me to self monitor whilst being on 4x80 mg Gliclazide and 2000mg of Metformin. I reckoned she was trying to save a referral and possibly bump me off. My DSN at the hospital is excellent, she's a Type 1 but sure knows her stuff.

She's not even a DN - just the general practice nurse, that's what's so great about it. She immediately said yeah that's great so you know what makes your blood sugar... Then did almost a rocket motion skyward with her hand..... ;). The previous one I saw last year was very different just telling me to cut out sugary drinks, cakes and biscuits... And got me on a couple of courses. By the time I'd gotten on it I'd spent time on the D-uk website and was answering Qs other folk asked that the presenters couldn't... Local council office bods, not medical folks. I'd previously asked about on Freecycle if anyone had any books abt D and I got a reply said don't need books try this website and I've a spare monitor if you'd like it and went on from there... He was a self confessed failed diabetic.... And learned too late to save his legs to take it seriously. Like @kman he didn't want me to go the way he had

I'd've thought testing ESSENTIAL you being on meds.....
 
We'll 5.5 pre 2 pieces of cake that does have 'some' sugar in (soft brown) and grated apple but made with soya flour, baking powder and xanthan gum. Great texture and flavour. At one hour 6.4 watch this space for 2hrs. I allowed myself the two pieces, it being an experiment ;)
 
I got myself a free monitor initially but when I ran out of test strips and lancets my GP refused to order them. The practice nurse told me they don't give glucometers out as ' people get too obsessed by them'! In other words, they wanted to save money. I was only given one by the specialist nurse when I started insulin.

God I hate testing different foods but that's put me in the mood to test a full pkt of Jaffa Cakes:D
 
The cake sounds good Jan. What's the recipe sounds like it glue free and can always swap butter for vitalite.
 
6.3 and that's after heavy post dinner exercise. Blame it on a light LD :)

They should make them compulsory. having said that, if somebody offered me a monitor before I knew how useful they are, I probably wouldn't have accepted as I was the worlds worst for hating needles. I cringed in hospital when I found out I was going to be tested every hour on the hour. Now I have no problem with it, not even the blood samples at the GP's.:D
 
Had my tea at 8pm tonight, 2 hours later than normal so that I won't feel like snacking during the evening. 2 hrs on and a reading of 5.9, happy with that.

Hi Kimbo. As you probably know I'm fairly new to this diabetes thing but one thing i have picked up on are B S levels and forgive me if I'm wrong but isn't a reading of 4.9 slightly low? I know it's not dangerously low but I would be a little frightened to go to bed with a figure like that. I'm probably very wrong, if so please let me know.:)

It might be low for people relying on insulin, but for the majority of us Type 2's our livers will take care of things overnight if we go too low. I often go to bed in the high 4's but by morning I'm back in the 5's.

Buy mine on eBay - reckon majority are "prescribed" ones too... Crazy isn't it really. People getting them prescribed and not using them and others tearing their hair out to get them on script who want to help their health, not bank balance...

It's lovely. My banana cake recipe that my eldest daughter tried with apple yesterday and so I just had to try it too (especially as I wanted to try out the soya flour again using the gum) I will post it tomo - in bed reading now. Please remind me if I forget. Hope your asthma let's you get good night's sleep
