New Year, New LCHF Me

He has read it and so have I, but he still disagrees with eating fat and showed me a book 'The New High Protein Diet: Lose weight quickly, easily and permanently' that his family has used to control their blood sugars, lose weight and be medication free. This morning I did have my breakfast nutriblast which only had 7.8g of carbs and consisted of 160g of mixed frozen berries, 2 teaspoons of a mixture of flaxseed, goji berries, pumpkin and sunflower seeds with a teaspoon of cinnamon and ginger filled with water. It was refreshing, but the ginger and cinnamon overpowered the berries.

@AndBreathe I had my appointment with my livewell advisor on Thursday and it went great as I went from being 24 stone 4 pounds in November to 22 stone 9 pounds. We then discussed my diet and she agrees with my friend in halls that I should eat more protein, eat moderate amounts of fat and low carb. I feel more comfortable eating protein-based foods instead of fat-based foods after discussing with my counselor as to why I could not stick to LCHF.

My blood sugar levels are now ranging from 6 to 11 and I feel more alive and have been told recently that I look great. From next week onwards I will be going the gym for an hour everyday from Monday to Friday, mixing up my workouts so that I am doing upper body on Monday & Wednesday, lower body on Tuesday & Thursday and on Friday I can do any workout. At the weekends I will be swimming in the morning and will be getting in 30 minutes of walking as the swimming pools are a 15 minute walk from where I am.

That sounds great. reducing the carbs is the key. The fat/protein balance may mean you lose weight a little more slowly than could otherwise happen, but it's a great compromise if it means you can significantly reduce the carbs and stick with it.

Hopefully your bloods will moderate a little more in due course, but, lets face it 6-11 is batter than anything with a leading 2, or 3!!

Should things ever drift again, please don't allow such a crisis to develop. It can't have been good for you, and it can't have been good those those around you who care for you.

@akindrat18
Well done to you for your efforts. I know it is not easy, especially in your final year at uni. Concentrate on getting the BG levels sorted, and the weight loss will follow.

Please keep posting, even when you are not doing so well. Advice and support is here.

Thanks for the comment guys.

I'm currently waiting for my breakfast cook which is 2 chickens wrapped in bacon with cheese from tesco. It takes 45 minutes and normally I would have a bowl of cereal or 2 straight away when I get out of bed because its quick and easy.

Two chickens? You are a hungry lad!

I'm usually happy to wait a while before I eat in the mornings, provided I can have a nice cup of tea, but in your shoes, something like a small piece of cheese to keep you going for the 45 minutes might help? I know I bang on (and on, and on!) about Babybel, but at around 60 calories and a few grammes of fat, it could be helpful.

I feel more hungry in the morning than I do in the afternoon or evening. Plus I might take your offer on the Babybel as i've never tried it before and Tesco are having an offer on Mini Babybel's for any 2 packs for £2.50 from gouda, cheddar, goats cheese and full fat soft cheese.

Also I finally have some mini clip on tupperware to take out with me and what I might do the night before I make a trip out of home is to have a hard boiled egg, a slice of meat and grated cheese already prepared. My parents are proud of my weight loss so far, but they (especially my mum) keep on saying that I should lose 5 or 6 stone when I finish uni in April/May time and I feel pressured whenever they say that I should lose x amount of weight.

I'm not surprised you feel pressurised. If I were you I would do my best with the weight loss and not worry about any targets at all. You (like me) have a lot of weight to lose. I don't find having targets helpful. Yes I have targets as to how much exercise I will do and what food I will eat etc., but actual weight loss targets - no. To my mind it only brings disappointment. Disappointment is not good when you are trying to lose weight.

For the record I am proud of your weight loss so far too. :) I know how hard it is.

Excellent. By taking small steps like that, to be prepared you're much less likely to fall face first into a doughnut, Danish or thick doorstops of white bread. After a short while, it'll just be second nature.

As for your folks? I'm sure they mean well, and perhaps think they're showing their faith in you by saying how much they think you can lose in that time?

Personally, I never had a weight loss goal, only bloods, but I must admit as I started to lose weight, fairly easily, I did then decide to trim right up, and actually found it quite hard to stabilise at the end. In reality, I'm lighter now that I intended and indeed than I think makes the most of my figure, but hey ho. That's life!

Stick with it. I really sense a difference in you since you went to hospital, and I hope you find the way forward doesn't have too many obstacles.

My parents mean well and they do encourage me to lose weight and keep my blood sugar levels in control. My mum earlier today said to me that if I continue going the gym and swim regularly at uni till I leave, that I will continue the same when I go back to them at the end of semester.

Going to the hospital did change my view as whilst I was their trying to watch what I eat, other diabetics their were just ordering carb based foods and having sugary desserts. I almost felt sorry for them.

@AndBreathe this is my lunch for today. Thai sweet chilli tuna, green olives, grated cheese and sour cream with chives. For my breakfast I had 2 frikadellens topped with cheese and some salsa, but I think they will no longer be in my next shopping trip as they raised my blood sugars to 15.8. Now though after a gym session they have come down to 12.7.

My food shop from tesco came and I am confident that the carb cravings will not get the best of me. I've got salmon, mackerel in evo, hot dogs with one hot dog having 1.4 grams of carbs, pork crackling, 60 eggs, pickled beetroot (I don't know why but I love beets now), Mayo, pork chops and mini chedder babybels.

My blood sugar levels have been averaging between 8 and 14. Been having porridge for breakfast for the past week so I think its time to hang it up. I've recently been told that beetroot and cayenne pepper is good for lowering BG levels and I thought to myself, why not give them a try.

Go for it!

Just a quiet word on beetroot; it seems to be one of those foods some can eat aplenty and for others is a no-no.

Well I guess I will have to find out if its a no or a yes, once I can get my blood sugars below 6 after tonight as their is a massive student night out called Carnage and after it, I shall be ditching the lager and cider for a glass of red. Also I shall be ordering no more takeaways as last night i was fighting with myself over ordering a takeaway and after 2 hours caved in and ordered a burger with mozzerala sticks.

From tomorrow onwards and for a week or 2, I will be posting my blood sugar levels and what i've ate throughout the day to keep track of my low carb progress and don't end up carb crashing again.

This morning my levels were a bit high from the alcohol last night, followd by a chippy at 23.4 and just had a nosebleed which I'm going to get checked out and possibly cauterised as it only bleeds in my left nostril.

Hiya,
If you have to have a takeaway - why not go for a kebab instead of chips....the only bad bit will be the pitta bread and by the time you have eaten all the meat, lettice and tomato you most likely wont need it. You could also help yourself by not drinking beer and sticking to shorts with diet mixers...

I've never been a fan of kebabs. Also I'm cutting down on the beer slowly and replacing it with southern comfort all diet lemonade.
