I had cheese salad for lunch, a handful of walnuts and almonds for a snack this afternoon, and tarragon chicken with leeks and mushrooms on a bed of spring cabbage for dinner.

I've managed to sort out a menu for the next 10 days which should suit me and my husband (he's fussy!), he's not diabetic. I shall be roasting kale and cauliflower tomorrow to nibble on, and will be making tomato and basil soup.

I have just received my glucose meter and will use it before and after lunch tomorrow to see what's what. I'm a bit of a baby when it comes to pricking myself, is there any other place on the body that is more suitable and less painful than the fingers please? Thank you :)

Hi Kim, I think I will be coming to yours for my dinners, they sound yummy :) Try pricking the side of your finger, its not so painful as there are less nerve endings there. I test mine before and 2 hours after every meal as I am finding I am getting a much better picture of what my levels are doing. I also do one first thing in the morning.

Deb

;)Thank you Deb. I shall give it a go. I'll try both sides of my finger. I've got some reading to do for using it. It's an SD codefree. I'll have get some more lances, 10 is not enough!

I've been testing for nearly a month - I didn't fancy sticking pins in myself at first but you do get used to it.

 I'm really not keen, but I know I should do it if I'm to find out what does and doesn't spike my sugar :)

I don't change the lancet each time I test. In fact I probably only change it once a month and have not had any problems with this.

Do you use it 6 times a day? Is it an SDCodefree? I know there are some makes that allow you to use them a few times.

I don't change my lancets until either they really start to hurt because they are blunt, or when they stop drawing blood properly. It's up to you of course. Did you order extra strips from Codefree and use the discount code?

Yes it's a Codefree. I don't use it 6 times a day any more as I sort of know what foods I can tolerate but do test new foods or if I feel like I'm straying off track. However didn't replace the lancet more often even when I was testing 6 times a day at the beginning.

Where would I get a discount code for the test strips @Bluetit1802 ?

I thought lancets were a one-shot deal. Well, you live & learn. I'll start reusing them.

I've ordered extra strips, but didn't know about the discount code

Kim, turn the setting on the SD Codefree device down to the lowest you need to produce a droplet. I run mine at 2.5.

Lots of people including me reuse them, Like Blue Tit I only change mine when it really hurts...around a month. There was a thread about this sometime back

Thank you. I'll search for the thread. I'm still finding my way around the forums :)

Just remember to keep them clean if you re-use them!

I use an Accu-Chek Fastclix (although I have a different brand meter) and this has a little cassette with 6 lancets in so they're all hidden away and I never actually have to see the lancets- it was a real psychological boost when I first started testing as I had a "thing" about needles and dreaded having to prick my fingers. I can normally do it without flinching now, so it's possibly worth considering this type if you're really nervous - and lancets are usually fairly cheap. Definitely start off with a low setting, mine is also generally 2 to 2.5 and I use it until it gets blunt/needs the higher setting.
