Reactive Hypoglycaemia

Do you still have mild hypo's every day Brun? My bg seems much more stable now but still get symptoms. Before breakfast and before dinner seem to be my worst times.

Nope.
Now that I have sorted my diet (it REALLY is KEY for me) I only ever get mild hypos, maybe 3x a month. And they are so mild they are hardly worth the name.

- and they are ALWAYS my fault.
- if I have gone too long without food, or I ate the wrong thing
- or I am tired and stressed - and failed to compensate with food

My danger points have always been late morning (when my DP drops if I didn't eat breakfast) or just before my evening meal, if it is delayed, or I didn't organise food properly earlier in the day.

So, don't worry! It is possible. But it has taken me a looong time to learn all of this. I started having hypos at around 4 years old. Went lowish carb in my teens. PRogressed to low carb in my 20s/30s. and only went VLC 2 years ago. I am now 48.

It is a long learning curve, but worth it!

Sharp drops are definitely a trigger - but you need to work out why you have such a sharp drop at certain times, and eat something before it happens. Don't wait for the symptoms to develop.

I am guessing that you get it after rushing round with the kids, in the morning?
In that case, you need to eat something more substantial than a few almonds, so that the food catches you as you drop.
The shakes in the morning are either as soon as I get out of bed or after I've had my shower (which on week days is immediately after waking). That's why I've been having a few almonds to try and keep me going until I can get breakfast. May be I should try something with a small amount of carbs. I don't seem to spike after Aldi Milk and cereal breakfast biscuits. I might try just one as I wake and see if it helps.

I really need to get a grip of this and make some headway, as its really affecting my day to day life. I take my hat off to you all that have been dealing with it for years, especially without a diagnosis and support from the medical profession.

Milk is usually a trigger for me as lactose is a sugar. Try and reduce the milk a bit and I would have thought cereal biscuits are a big no no.

From what you are saying, your trigger may involve physical activity after being at rest.
(that is just speculation)

If that is the case, you may find full keto adaptation (the kind that happens after 4-6 weeks of seriously consistent keto eating, and no carb/bg swings) as an amazingly liberating experience. It happens when the body properly switches to ketones as fuel, and the ketones become your default setting. It is not the same as just 'being in ketosis' and 'having ketones'.

Phinney explains it very well in some of his you tube videos - using his experiences of working with keto adapted endurance athletes.

He explains it as running on ketones gives you many thousands of calories of fuel at your disposal - effectively as a bottomless fuel tank. while running on glucose, your readily available fuel reserves are your current blood glucose and glycogen stores - which are tiny in comparison.

Some of his athletes run 100 mile races, never hitting 'the wall' becase they are running on fat, not glucose, so they just have endless ketones, and endless energy. I am, of course, paraphrasing.

Good news my heart scan was good! No holes no obvious defects :) MRI tonight so crossing everything :))))

Fantastic news! Hope all goes well tonight. A little girly tip - wear a sports bra as they'll ask you to take a normal one off! The fastener can get hot and burn you

Thanks Kaz! I didn't get this in time
So yes had to take mine off! It wasn't a nice experience but I got through it with a little help from an Olly Murrs cd. Tries to push the radiologist a bit for reassurance but nothing. She said try not to worry if they need you sooner they will call you. Of course this did nothing to reassure me in fact quite the reverse!

I took a Cd but could hardly hear it for the noise the MRI scanner made! Try not to worry, I'm sure all will be fine. How long have you got to wait for the results? If you don't mind me asking, why did they send you for a MRI scan? If you'd rather not answer don't worry....just curious x

Let's hope they haven't found anything too serious!

I was diagnosed with a stroke last month with no clinical evidence to suggest I had actually had one other then 'my story' the consultant told me I had either had a stroke or had MS. My story was that I had an odd episode where I started stuttering a lot for five mins was a bit shaky and felt a bit queasy and went pale. Looking back my cheek was twitching a bit too. All of which could be accountable for RH but was not considered. I started having violent tremors and twitching muscles a week later and then collapsed in a restaurant having munched my way through a bowl of chips having home hungry. My sugar didn't drop but I was definitely having a hypo and it may have dropped suddenly I suppose as was only 6.6 when tested and I know the carbs I put away would have had me up at 14 or more. Of course I only know this now I have been monitoring for a few weeks and my symptoms which were a lot of blurred vision dizziness and tremors are almost gone

It could have been a bad hypo. No way of telling unfortunately.
Good luck trying to find out and hope it doesn't happen again. best wishes your way x

Thanks all. There is a clue Nosher in that I had been doing the Cambridge diet off and on for a year and on this particular day I though I am so
Tired I can't do this anymore and I went to the shop and bought four wholemeal cobs and a plastic tub of soup I then ate two cobs and all the soup mega fast having not eaten since 7am (it was two pm at this point) and the oddness talking was within minutes of finishing my food. My colleague who I was talking to say he hasn't noticed anything wrong with me so it can't have been as bad as I thought it was and it was definitely a stutter not slurring. So I'm pinning my hopes on RH!! Also the cheek that was twitching that day is the one that goes numb and tingling when I need to eat it's like an early warning system. I will soon find out though hopefully in 2-3 weeks. Thanks all for your support it means a lot. X

I'm hoping they haven't found anything Nosher! Except of course what should be there :) fingers crossed xx

What was yours for Kaz? Xx
I hope you get some answers soon. My MRI was several years ago. I had been having problems with my balance for a while and they wanted to check my ears and brain. All ok thankfully, but the wait for the results was a pretty anxious time even though they didn't think there was anything sinister going on.

Let us know how you're doing and good luck
