Type of diabetes
Type 1
Hi, so over 3 weeks ago I had a fasting blood test, after lots of people commenting on the amount I drink. (About 15 pints and day) had lost about 1.5 stone tired all the classic symptoms... Fasting reading 20
Doctor had me in straight away and was put on gliclazide given a BG reader. Went back 2 days later BS still high 26. Next step diabetic nurse put me on Latus insulin and gliclazide increased. Few days later back to DN increased gliclazide and put on metformin also Currently gliclazide 160 AM and PM metformin 500mg AM and PM and insulin 12ml PM I think the idea is to get my levels in range and get me off the insulin. My levels are fine in the morning. Before lunch 7 ish and before evening meal 6-9 before bed vary can be 9-13 I'm careful what I eat healthy exercise daily 34 yrs old Normal weight 8st 10. I've not been told I'm type 1 or 2 has anyone been down this route? It's a complete mind field!!

Lisa, if I was you, the next conversation I had with the nurse would be asking for a C-Peptide and GAD antibody test. The two together will go a long way to answering your questions.

Your symptoms appear to be classic late onset t1 but your treatment seems to be a combination of both t1 and t2.

Whilst we can't diagnose you on a forum, it might be worth asking the nurse why she isn't treating you as a t1.

Hi. I'm Type 2 and have not been on insulin. But...i was first diagnosed with fasting level of about 20 and placed on Gliclazide, which was doubled when it didn't seem to have any effect. Still little effect until I radically adjusted my diet. Now my levels are really getting down closer to the normal range (often well inside it) and seldom above 8.5. Off the meds. So, my question is - you say you eat healthy...what is healthy? What are you eating? And...did you say 15 pints a day?? Pints of..?

You are not alone. In September I was diagnosed as suspected Type 1 by a consultant and put on insulin but the DNS thinks I could still be Type 2 because of age, weight and so on and put me on Metformin and took me off insulin to protect me from Hypos. I had a GAD done which came back negative but this is inconclussive and they don't want to do a c-peptide just yet as it is against policy. So basically I am now in diabetic limbo on a regime of metformin, exercise and diet with insulin in the fridge as there is a chance I am Type LADA and in what they call the honeymoon phase.

I can appreciate what you are going through and how frustrating it is not to have a clear diagnosis, all I can suggest is educate yourself on each type especially LADA and that way you know what signs to keep an eye out for whilst understanding what you should be doing when it comes to diet and exercise to keep your blood sugar down. To be honest I have stopped worrying about what type I am as in my mind I am sure I am LADA and so just go about the daily business of staying as healthy as I can.

Hi and welcome. Looks like it could well be Late onset T1. I've been down that route. Normal weight together with your young age are strong pointers. Gliclazide is good until it stops working if you are a LADA. Insulin may well be needed long-term. If you do stay on insulin, be prepared to ask for the Basal/Bolus regime instead of just Basal or mixed. This gives the best control but does use more injections. My DN started me on just Basal but added Bolus within 4 weeks as she could see Basal wasn't enough. I had GAD and c-peptide done privately. GAD showed nothing but my c-peptide showed low insulin as suspected.

Thank u all for your replies. I have spoken to my DN today. As my levels are still high 2 hrs after I eat and before bed still 9-13 been advised to take another metformin so now 1000mg in the evening along with gliclazide and to reduce insulin and see how that goes. Feel like I'm starving myself and afraid to eat any carbs as my levels take
So long to come down. All trial and error
It seems. Hopefully this will help, if not when I next see the nurse will ask about the GAD test. Nice to know I'm not alone. Thank u all for your help

My thoughts are EXACTLY the same as Tim's.

I exhibited the same signs you described and the C-peptide and GAD tests both confirmed I had type 1. My pancreas still produces a considerable (although still much lower than the average person) amount of insulin. If you're like me (and it sounds like you may be) that can make it extremely difficult for a doctor to effectively diagnose you without the c-pep/gad testing.

Thank you, I will called my DN and ask her about a Gad test and see what she has to say. Just tested me levels 4hours after eating and still 9.8. Only has salmon and A small portion of cous cous.

Hi. Sorry to be negative but the additional Metformin will probably do very little but won't do any harm. Reducing the insulin seems strange but I'm merely an amateur. Don't starve yourself as I did for a year with my GP refusing to give me insulin (she said as I wasn't T1 I must be T2 and should stop starving myself - rather silly). Finally my GP agreed I needed insulin and my lovely, experienced DN tried Basal and then added Bolus very quickly. It's been brilliant. Be prepared to be assertive if the blood sugar doesn't come down.
