Anybody else find LC just does not work for them?

Your body might be undernourished on the low calorie diet - I find that when eating low carb I can keep my weight steady or drifting downwards eating more calories than when my weight was constantly inching (ouncing?) upwards. Calories can be counted as negative, it seems.

    Mediterranean diet disaster

I had the same thing for almost half a century - between leaving home and being diagnosed type 2. I told the HCPs it didn't work, but I was always told I was the one in the wrong - a couple of years after diagnosis I saw one of the older GPs and I think he'd have been happier if I'd taken up...

    Falafels

@Zixx it might depend on how well you digest legumes - I avoid them as I get more carbs than listed, but not everyone does. Only way to be sure it to experiment and take a reading before eating and 2 hours later.

    Alternatives to standard medication

Hello @MMcNiel - do you have a blood glucose tester? I found it really useful to be able to check my blood glucose levels after eating - once I was seeing lower levels after meals I lost weight - but I suspect it was a response to the low carb levels rather than the cause of them.

Looking for ideas for low carb 2nd course- ''sweet'' or savoury

A useful basis for many second courses is a sponge type pudding. An egg, two Tbsp of almond flour 1Tbsp of coconut flour 1Tbsp of butter, coconut oil or suet, a scant 1/2tsp baking powder. You can then add various options; a splish of vanilla or lemon essence, the zest and juice of a lemon or...

    Leg problems when taking metformin

Before diagnosis I was fine - but my weight was going up and up as I was being pushed to eat high carb and low fat foods, exactly the opposite of what I needed. I was given Metformin and Atorvastatin and became very unwell very quickly. Once diagnosed and off the tablets I felt better but it...

Low Carb diet and Lactose intolerance

I too was just reflecting that if I was lactose intolerant a few small alterations would be all that was required. Every week or so I use a small amount of milk in a dessert, but it would be easy enough to add another egg for instance.

    The Next Superfood.

I eat just about anything - not oysters or snails. Rather a long time ago now I had to be sent home in a taxi after realising that the oysters served to me were a) still alive and b) trying to run away.

High protein breakfast ideas on the go

If you want something really low carb then a wide necked thermos flask with stewed beef or chopped steak with either mixed veges or mushrooms and a bit of gravy. I advise not adding herbs or spices as if kept warm the flavour can become strange, or spices can become really overpoweringly hot.

    The Next Superfood.

I used to grow 'long white icicle' radishes in the deep rich soil of a floodplain. It was truly astonishing. I offered a few to the greengrocer next door and he laughed at the idea of selling radish by weight. They look like parsnips and are very easy to grow if you have deep topsoil.

    Testing sugars

@clhiett I can only say possibly. Trying to stick to too many rules can get a bit dismal - and I found that under 8Mmol/l resulted in further improvements over time. Personally rather than reducing the amount I ate I chose to eat foods which are lower carb - with pork chops I often have the...

    Disappointing results.

Our brains are 85% lipids, of which cholesterol comprises a significant amount - plus all cell membranes and the covering of nerves (myelin) are 'lipid rich'. Cholesterol is raw material for hormones, steroids and such useful stuff as insulin. Cholesterol also figures in the creation of ATP...

    Newly diagnosed and scared

The Hairy Bikers did a lasagne using leek, split and dropped into hot water to uncurl it. The amount of liquid had to be reduced so it was not runny but people ate it and did not realise it was not pasta. I do curry and put it on chopped cauliflower rather than rice. I cook swede in my pressure...

    Surprise result HbA1c 54

I will be 75 years old in April, and have been feeling a bit better in the last few days, and that dreadful cough is now almost gone. After everything I was expecting my HbA1c to be far higher as I was simply unable to get out of bed some days, no shopping or cooking , though perhaps the days I...
