I phoned my dr, regarding the free style libre to get on prescription, I have been funding this my self for six months and found the libre very beneficial for my diabetes care . The unfortunate response I got from my Dr was at the moment my area have not agreed to this , the dr said I need to ring back in December as the Bury area have to have a discussion to decide if they are going to fund it or not is such a shamble as this has been a big asset in my life . I was wondering has anybody else had the same problems

Hi Mark
Assuming Bury is under the same Manchester CCG that I'm under (I live in Milnrow) then this is my experience attempting to get the Libre from my GPs surgery on prescription..........

I made my GPs surgery aware I wanted one as soon as it I heard they were available on the NHS.
This was way before the official launch date of the 1st November 2017.
They badgered and badgered the CCG who refused to make a decision.
ON the 1st November 2017 the CCG announced that each individual would have to be assessed by the nearest diabetic specialist on a case by case basis.
Brittle diabetics come top of the list.
I have one of the best GPs surgeries in the North West who look after my diabetes care.
I do not see a specialist.
I have now had blood tests done and am waiting for an appointment with a specialist who doesn't know me from Adam and has the power to improve my quality of life or not as the case may be.

I desperately hope you succeed but I feel I am going to fail in my endeavours.

Tony

So it this appointment to decide on you getting the Libre?

How come you don't see a diabetic consultant...?

Has your GP been able to provide dose adjustment training...?

Yes the appointment is to see if i can have one.........

I don't see a consultant as i've been type 1 for 43 years and was DAFNE trained years ago.
I don't want to appear smug i manage myself and see my GP or Practice nurse if i need anything.

No, you don't seem smug....

I too don't require any assistance from my team but I do still attend the hospital clinic......just a preference I suppose...

I'm in Northamptonshire and saw my DSN about a week ago. She knows I use a self-funded Libre. She told me that 2 local diabetic consultants are drawing up a business plan to present to the local Health authority and guidelines for prescription are being developed. Two proposed ones are
A. People who are testing around 9 times plus per day, often children
B. People who are eligible for an insulin pump, even if they've chosen to stick with injections at present.
I'm afraid I can't remember the others. I'm seeing her again in February when she hopes to have some definite news.
So things are happening but not as quickly as some of us would like.
She also commented that the numbers currently using the Libre are not always known to the GP surgeries who are obviously the people who have to issue the prescriptions.

Thanks for all the reply’s , it seems to me that all of us who are self funding for this fantastic piece of equipment are all finding it difficult to get this on the NHS , even though it is helping us all immensely

Hi Tony this is disgraceful, I don’t understand why they won’t allow us to have this as we all know that our control is a lot better with the libra free style.

I live in West Sussex and I asked the Diabetes Nurse at my Surgery about having one of these on the NHS because I cannot afford it. I was told, no, I was not eligible and I am still trying to find out why.
