Hi peeps I am a type 1 insulin pumper I have had diabetes well over 25 years :) I can even remember my first ever insulin injector which I called metal micky because it was made of metal and glass and was huge :). I have neuropathy and I am hypo unaware :( . I also suffer from depression and I have serious anxiety issues. I am not complaining about the cards I have been be given regarding my health issues I try and get on with my life the best way I can.
Being hypo unaware I can collapse and go unconscious even doing the daily house work I try so hard not to collapse by having 5 sweet whilst I am cleaning, working or when I am busy just to keep my blood sugars up and I reduce my basal rate but I still collapse and go into severe hypo. During theses severe hypo I can pee and poo my self Its very embarrassing and makes me feel dirty and useless. I am just asking if any one else has had this happen or so medical advise on why I do this. I have done so much googling on this subject but come up with nothing. Any help with explaining this thing would be most helpful.
I am seeing my diabetes specialist and my pump nurse who have told me that yes this could happen but I am still unsure about why I do this.Thankfully my specialist and pump nurse has I call her are monitoring my B/S and we are altering my basal rate in hope that my B/S will settle.
Thanks every one I know this is a embarrassing subject and I will treat every reply with great thanks and care.

First off, sorry you have things so rough. Have you tried monitoring your blood levels on a more frequent basis. It's literally a pin but better than the alternative, for sure. I've had T1 for 3+ years and check about 5-6 times a day and I'm not presuming after a number of years you are not so vigilant, but it may help to check and eat more often. Also, I'd see a dietrician. It's embarassing but they may hold the key. Are you taking too much/little insulin/food? That's what they're paid for. It's their job. I'm thinking of possibilities, do you eat and inject like clockwork, or when you remember? This is no dig, I seriously want you to find an answer as it may be bowel related like me. A simple iddy-biddy blood clot. Please see someone, I'm pretty sure it's not your fault and if it is, you alone hold the answers. All the best. I've put some awkward info out there, I regret it now, but first and foremost, please see a medical profession, ie: your GP, in the first case. He or she may be able to to detect immediately. We're civilians. My advice is don't risk it any longer! Go tomorrow! I feel gutted to you!

Good luck my friend, Mart.

You are one brave person. Don't be too proud, tell it like it is, please.

Hi

I think in the case of serious hypos where one loses consciousness, it's known for diabetics to lose bladder control and wee themselves unfortunately. The same could be said for bowel control as well. Its something to do with the way the brain functions and stress hormones. Not everyone is able to rely on glucagon being released to rescue people so that is why glucose is given iv or oral glucose used through the bucal lining.

Have you tried to get yourself onto cgm as that would help you and I think you have sufficient reason for a CCG to fund it.

Not quite the same as yourself, I have been type two for around 21 years. I had started on insulin all those years ago and my first hypos found me wetting myself. When I came too I would often cry with embarrassment, a sign recognised now as depression. I eventually lost weight and came off insulin, and went to tablets. Recently my levels had been climbing slowly and during this time (perhaps the last year?) I would pass urine in the normal way and when finished go about my work, then perhaps 3 or even as long as 15 minutes later urine starts flowing again. Not a lot granted but embarrassing all the same, for me it is neuropathy, some nerve endings not being sensitive to my bladder emptying. I feel for you but the last poster was right, you need to review your entire treatment regime, I had terrible bowel accidents on Metformin, they stopped when I stopped taking it. Your case is different but above all everyone around you will understand, you are not worthless or dirty, you have a disease that needs caring for.

I was told by the doctors my body would adjust, I told them three years later the shops were running out of underwear, they all laughed and said no more Metformin!

Good luck

Hello and welcome

What an awful thing to happen to you, and I can understand your embarrassment writing about it. I haven't lost bodily functions in the lower regions, but I have woken up covered in vomit, but that was a few years ago. I hope your diabetic team can help you get control, they might even try to get your BS a little higher to stop you from going into a severe hypo.

I wish you well and send you my very best wishes for a positive outcome.
Take care

RRB :)
