hi there,

Just wanted to say hi, I'll be on here a lot. I'm not confirmed diabetic yet but it's a forgone conclusion.

Went to the gp last Friday with infected 'sweat spots' on my neck. After a discussion with my GP he did a pin prick blood test. I was 28.5 at 5pm in the afternoon. He did another with a different machine... 30 :(

Gave me a blood test machine, told me to cut refined sugars and I'm booked in for a proper blood test in the morning with the nurse.

Saturday am - fasting test 22.5
Sunday am - fasting 17.3

My GP is now on holiday for 2 weeks but has already set up a repeat of Metformin to start if/when the tests come back positive.

Pretty devastated to be honest but it is what it is. Start of a new life, with a fresh outlook. Needs to cut back on **** food and beer anyway.

Lots to learn, although my wife is a rock and a great source of knowledge as her mum is diabetic (10+ years)

Looking forward to making some new friends on here.

Cheers

Dean

Hi Dean...welcome to the forum. I wish I could tell you otherwise but sorry...it does seem pretty likely...especially if your doctor is prescribing metformin.

I'm type 1 so not sure any advice I could give would be so great...except for cutting your carbs down...as well as refined sugars. Take a look at the type 2 and also the Low carb forum...sure you'll get plenty of advice.

Also a book I would recommend for all diabetics regardless of type...Dr-Bernsteins-Diabetes-Solution...well worth a read...quite inspirational with excellent advice.

Wish you well...take care

Hi Dean,

I was diagnosed in April, but I had bought myself a meter a few weeks before then as I was displaying the symtoms.

I had fasting readings of 17+ when I started, but after finding this forum and the wonderful help and advice I now routinely get readings of 5.5 in the mornings when I test.

The advice and guidance this forum and the brilliant members provide will help you tremendously.

Good luck.

@DeanLJ

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

Here is the information we give to new members and I hope you will find it useful. Ask as many questions as you like and someone will help.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED DIABETICS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you’ll find over 150,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.
There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:

  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates

Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

Another option is to replace ‘white carbohydrates’ (such as white bread, white rice, white flour etc) with whole grain varieties. The idea behind having whole grain varieties is that the carbohydrates get broken down slower than the white varieties –and these are said to have a lower glycaemic index.
http://www.diabetes.co.uk/food/diabetes-and-whole-grains.html

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to bloodglucose testing supplies.

It's not that bad once you get to terms with it ,
Start with the carbs bread, rice spuds and pasta ,smaller portions that will start to bring down your BG , test just before a meal and then 2 hrs after , and keep note of how different foods affect you sugars
Keep well stay safe JJ

Hi Dean,
Welcome to the forum.
It's a bit of a shock at first. You think the world's collapsed, but it all goes on. I find it useful to focus on the things I can eat rather than the things I can't eat.
Beware of those who say "anything in moderation". I find it easier to be strict with things like cake than to have "small bits" and then not be able to enjoy any more carbs for ages.

Hi and welcome to the forum. The news is a shock but once you come to terms with it things aren't all bad. I'm still quite new but have found the changes in diet have started shifting the pounds I've struggled to move for a few years. Also I found this fantastic forum which has truly excellent guidance and support. Good luck with the docs and here's to a new beginning

Well had the official nod that I'm type 2. The official fasting blood test on monday came in at 16.1

started Metformin today, just 1 500mg tablet to start with for the first week. My fasting self test this morning was 16.9 then took the Metformin.

After a breakfast of the Lidl high Protein roll and a salad with beef at lunch (banana in there too) i test this evening at 16.1

been through hell over the weekend / early week, major sugar and carb withdrawal but now feeling much better and almost back to my 'old' normal.

hopefully within a few weeks my new normal will be like i was 10 years ago ;)

This forum is awesome, thank you everyone for your support and help and for sharing knowledge. I've almost come to terms with part of the diabetes gang now LOL

Hi and wekcome to the forum. My numbers were the same as yours at diagnosis but you will get there. On reflection I tell everybody it was the best thing that ever happened to me as I started doing LCHF and I have never felt better. Im sure your levels will start to come down with time
