    Hypo on no meds’?

When it comes to diabetes, anything's possible. Sometimes the cause can be tracked down, sometimes not. In this case I suspect your liver dumped all its stored glucose into your system to help fight the infection... then ran out by the time you woke up.

Worried about time spent with high blood sugar levels

The body slowly repairs itself when sugars are normal. Life is always full of uncertainties but I reckon after a few years, you'll not be a lot worse off than if you never had diabetes. Remember that many people have elevated BGs for a decade or more before they start getting complications.

Type 1 & snacks at work

If you can afford it consider a CGM. Then you avoid a hypo before it happens. Still involves stepping out but you won't be walking around hypo and you can safely come back straight away because you don't need to wait for your sugar to come back up.

    Fiasp Duration

It's OK* to use NovoRapid for some meals and Fiasp for others. [*consult a doctor] I often do a "hybrid bolus" by doing two injections of different insulins for a meal. Some people mix them in a syringe, I know someone who does 50% Novo 50% Fiasp in a pump cartridge! They do this because...

Keep getting told by people that I can get rid of Diabetes Type one

That myth is itself a myth. Even in the middle ages it was common knowledge that the Earth was round. It was also believed that the sun circled the Earth but that is quite a different thing. As to people who tell you you can get rid of T1D, I wish I could get rid of THEM! Perhaps you should say...

    Incompetent medical professionals

I hope these give you a laugh! Pre diagnosis Optometrist: Why are you here before your annual check-up? Me: Well, I've noticed I've gotten a lot more short-sighted in the last month. Optometrist: Mmm... well it's probably taken longer than that. Me: No but I pay attention to it. It's just been...

    Gluco-testing question

Only if your sugar is rising or falling extremely quickly. Otherwise it's pretty much within the measurement error of the BG meter. With such a low-carb meal I think you are taking things too seriously. Unless your 6.3 result is very unusual?

    The fear

I like to say — does worrying achieve anything? If not, don't worry. Worry achieves things when you don't have good habits. It reminds you to check and double-check and spend alllll your time thinking about it. And worrying causes stress which upsets blood sugars! Good habits, on the other...

    Managing work, hypos and autism

Hypos are a genuine medical emergency and at any rate can interfere with your ability to be professional with customers. Legally the employer must make reasonable adjustments for your medical needs but in practice many employers won't, especially if you don't make it clear you know your rights...

    Interesting chat at the gym

Gluconeogenesis that is. Gluco + neo + genesis (sugar-new-making). The problem is that people have heard "the doctors who still say you need insulin are wrong, it's been proven, people with diabetes can get off insulin with low carb and exercise." Since they have been convinced "the...

    At a Crossroads

Ask yourself this. What is harder for you, being disciplined, carb counting, and watching what you eat and do? Or the physical tedium of pulling out your needles/fingersticks and pricking yourself? If the first one is a problem for you, getting a CGM, and even moreso a pump, will not help...

    Pierced ears

Having diabetes is irrelevant. Your average blood sugar is what's relevant. I'm not a doctor but I'd think if it's around 9mmol/L you're fine whereas if you're around 14 you should be careful.

Lantus to Levemir: in need of encouragement

Another reason to feel good about Levemir... Lantus forms a sticky ball when you inject it in your body and stays there. This is how it achieves its slow release, but putting physical pressure on the ball changes insulin release. Levemir does not have this problem. I have much better results on...

    Methylphenidate/ritalin & blood sugar

Haven't tried that one but yes, I have found certain medications change things up. If things are just different, then update your diabetes routine and go on with your merry life. (Just be aware that each time you change your medication your diabetes may change.) If things are unstable, talk to...

    Type 1 Unexpected blood glucose

Although this is possible (and DO double-check before you treat), if your number is 18-21 in my experience it's probably because your BG has hit the "20 limit". When my hands have sugars on them I generally get a random number like 26 (or "HI").

Low carb for weight loss with T1

Eating fat does not necessarily make you fat. Just like eating meat does not necessarily make your muscles grow. If you're worried about cholesterol etc. that's another thing. But a lot of people who eat Low Carb High Fat lose quite a bit of weight. I lost 7kg over 4 months this year, despite...

    Type 1 Unexpected blood glucose

I would say the most likely is that you forgot your basal, or that you have come down with an illness, so your blood sugar is basically out of control and has hit the "20 limit". That's the point where the kidneys start removing the excess glucose so no matter how much excess sugar you have your...

Interesting. Can you give me an idea of the actual numbers? How different? Give me a range.
