Diabetic parents and the effects on their children

Haven't had a bad Hypo that would have been obvious to my children (2 + 4), but the oldest understands that i need 'medicine sweets' every now and again. He doesn't bat an eyelid about injecting etc.. I think they're completely un-phased by it to be honest at that age, but i can imagine your...

    Stable blood sugar without NPH

Tricky maybe your basal is out? If you look up basal testing, loads of info available. In honeymoon it may all keep changing so have to be prepared for that. I haven’t ever really properly basal tested - I just make sure I’m fairly stable overnight. ratio wise, depending on what you eat...

    Stable blood sugar without NPH

I think Type 1 diabetes happens fairly quickly, coming to a head when you have symptoms, so i think that you'd be unlikely to have symptoms years before (i could be wrong!) When you first start taking insulin, it can give your remaining insulin cells a break, which can simulate production again...

    Nearly finished myself off..

Wow scary! Don't know if it helps, but my Basal (long acting) is in prefilled pens and Novorapid (Bolus) is in a refillable cartridge pen. I can't imagine that i would ever get them the wrong way round like this because they are so distinctly different. Good luck, hopefully you can get some...

    Injection sites?

There have been a few mentions of injection sites lately, and it's made me re-evaluate. I've only received advice (1 year in) to inject into abdomen, but would like to start to rotate as it seems like a good idea. Happy to use thigh etc.. but i don't have a lot of fat on my thigh (i do cycle...

    Freestyle libre issues

I’ve only recently started using libre but have had 3 sensors fail to do the full time. I Just started getting try again in 10 mins every other scan and then they just gave up. Out of 5 I’ve had since starting, only two have lasted without fault. I’ve discussed placing and application with...

With lock down I'm using this time to better my diabetes

Hi jaseB - glad the lock down is opening up new opportunities for you! For carb counting have a look at the nutracheck calorie counter app if you have a smart phone. You load your ingredients in there by weight and it gives you the carb output, you can even bar code scan packets to make. It...

    Managing exercise and insulin

Hi, can anyone tell me if theres a danger of ketones with reduced insulin and excersize? I’m currently away skiing and using a combination of reduced bolus (but still some bolus for breakfast and lunch) and snacks and I’m staying in 4.5- 9 range on the libre. If I bolus more I’ll have to eat...

    Hypo what number ?

Great thread- been thinking exactly the same lately. Can’t imagine feeling a 5, I don’t feel anything until sub 4. Seems like the main thing is the cause- ie excersize hypo can be seen off quickly, hypos without excersize have more staying power.

    New Diagnosis - Type 1

Hi, I’m 9 months in now and was fortunate to be able to control my diabetes with diet, excersize and no fast acting insulin for a few months. When I first started using novorapid it was like rocket fuel - had a hypo after 5-10 mins from 2 units but It did calm down massively over the following...

    Local Farm Produce

It has to be worth it to stick it to the supermarkets bad practices. We get our fruit and veg from a green grocers that do free delivery! Its mostly local produce and there is no packaging. The quality of the produce mostly knocks the supermarket stuff out of the park as well.

    Question about BG Levels

Thanks for all the responses. I totally understand that learning to Bolus effectively will be of massive benefit. Right now, i'm not even sure where to start, breakfast has flipped from having the biggest impact on my BG to now having minimal impact (i've literally doubled my breakfast)...

    Question about BG Levels

Hi, Just a couple of quick opinions wanted if anyone has any (everyone has them!): - Is it bad to exceed 9mmol on a regular basis (i.e. a few times a week), assuming this carries on for a honeymoon period of 6-12 months or more? - In terms of moving over to a bolus regime - DSN says eat more...
