    Oh Well.....

Hi DaveNN To answer a couple of your questions: In the new HBA1c measurements 78 equates to an "old style" reading of 9.25%, which in turn converts into an average actual mmol/mol of 12. In other words your own blood tests (if you are doing them) may be higher or lower than 12 but will be an...

    lipotrim or slimfast?

Hi jokhan, The forum doesn't advise on which are good or bad diet plans. However, members are free to give you their own opinions and to tell you what has worked for them. My own personal view (and I emphasise its a personal view) is that I wouldn't go near either of them. Having just looked...

    I don't get it!

Hi Merluna, I'm not sure where you got the 5g per portion from. Unadulterated popcorn is between 73g and 78g carbohydrate per 100g. Sweetened popcorn is 90g per 100g. So even with a savoury topping it's mostly carbohydrate. Something I would definitely avoid like the plague. Sorry, Dennis

    I don't get it!

Hi Merluna, Only my personal view but I always look for yoghurts that have less than 10g carbs per pot. The Weightwatchers ones are all pretty good. Agree wholeheartedly about bananas - pears are a lower alternative, or plums. I would recommend that you get a copy of the Collins Little Gem...

    heat in the work place

Thanks Angie, I take your point. The main thing I was trying to get across (perhaps not very successfully) is that we sometimes get so hung up on hypos and hypers that we tend to blame them on things that have nothing to do with our blood sugar levels. The only way to be certain is to test...

    heat in the work place

Hi kennyg, Are you sure that what you are experiencing are hypers/hypos? A hypo occurs when your blood sugar drops too low, which is quite possible if you have a very physical job. Working in high temperature can result in you using more energy and cause your blood sugar to drop a bit faster...

    Bydurion or Exanatide

Hi Revenant, I can't help you with Bydurion, but I was one of the first in the UK to be given Byetta (exenatide) in 2007 and am still on it. Yes, it can cause nausea but this seems to vary between the sexes (women seem to suffer more than men) but can be alleviated by timing when you inject...

    Lemon Coconut Cake

Granulated Splenda is mostly maltodextrin (which gives it the bulk) with a small amount of sucralose (which gives it the sweetness). No aspartame or any of the other nasties. Dennis

    Neuropathy - help i'm worried

Hi Klang, If your blood sugar levels are generally well controlled then what you are experiencing is unlikely to be neuropathy, but to be on the safe side I would see your GP and ask to be referred to a podiatrist for peripheral neuropathy tests.

    Hba1c reading

The way HBA1C tests are measured has changed recently to a new way that will be introduced worldwide. This replaces the "old" percentage measurement. Your reading of 86 is equivalent on the old scale to an HBA1C of 10%, which is quite high. 10% means your blood sugar level on average is around...

    Pre Diabetic question

This is one of those questions where you can ask 10 people and get 10 different answers. My own view is that it rather depends on how much control you want to have over your condition. Many people have found that they can delay the onset of diabetes, often for many years, by a simple reduction...

    Carb counting

Ally is absolutely right, but watch out for where the food comes from. Many US manufactored foods sold in Europe are labelled "US style" where the carbs amount includes fibre. If the food is manufactured in the UK or elsewhere in Europe then the carbs value has already had the fibre deducted.

    Carb counting

Further to the previous answer, food labels generally give the carb and sugar content. If it says "20g carb, of which 8g sugar" what this means is that, out of the 20g, 8g will convert into blood sugar within seconds. The other 12g will convert into blood sugar but slower. Just how slow will...

    METER READINGS

BG meters have an accuracy tolerence of + or - 10%, and no two meters will ever give an identical reading, so the difference you describe is not unusual. The important thing is to always use one meter then you will always get a consistent reading whether that is slightly higher or slightly...

    Glucophage sr dosage

With the SR version, splitting the daily dose into two parts is perfectly logical. The SR version works for up to 12 hours, so taking it in 2 doses means that it is covering you for a full 24 hours. If you take it all in a single dose then for half of every day you are getting a concentrated...

    Splenda

From the Splenda website: "SPLENDA® Granulated Sweetener is lighter in weight but measures and sweetens spoon-for-spoon like sugar. One SPLENDA® Tablet has the equivalent sweetness of one 5g teaspoon of sugar."

    Hba1c

An HBA1C test shows what your average blood sugar has been over the previous 3 months. So having two tests only a month apart, it isn't surprising that there is not a huge difference to be seen. This is why it is recommended that HBA1Cs should be done with at least a 3 month gap between them...

Maple syrup, a possibility or not?

Hi Suffolkboi, The claims that maple syrup has anti-diabetic properties are stretching the truth somewhat. The “magic ingredient” that has been discovered is that maple syrup contains phenols. These lower blood pressure, which carries a higher risk for diabetics, but although they are present...

    low carb diet help !!!

Chris, Sugar is just a carb that gets converted to glucose immediately. So if you eat something that has "15g carbs, of which 5g sugar" it means that the 5g sugar will convert to glucose and be absorbed by your blood immediately it reaches your stomach, whereas the other 10g will convert into...
