Hi, New member ----- a long time diabetic

Sorry to hear about the ear infection. Sounds pretty bad, glad you persevered and got more treatment, and it is on the mend. The long, low blood sugar is a worry. The fact it went on so long suggests you might have too much Lantus working away for hour after hour. I still think, apart from the...

What lunch and dinner to incorporate for sustainable way??

I don't do LCHF, but still eat the odd low carb stuff. How about cauliflower rice? I think it's a Jamie Oliver recipe - whizz up a cauliflower in the food processer, then microwave it for a minute or so, maybe with some water (though I find it does just as well without). I prefer it to rice now.

Hi, New member ----- a long time diabetic

That seems a pretty significant reduction in carbs over the day. I definitely think a lower Lantus does is called for. I find it hard to cut my night-time dose. The first week on the HEIDI course the team suggested I up my daytime doses, to use a ratio of 1 and a half to 10 units of...

Hi, New member ----- a long time diabetic

Hi. I often have similar trouble. I've been diabetic 40+ years, but recently went on a DAFNE-type course (it's called HEIDI where I live). It was really helpful and my daytime readings are brilliant - but mornings... From your posts it looks like you are now eating a bit less but taking more...

Type 1 from Scotland and having problems...

Hi Wullie. Welcome to the forum but sorry to hear things aren't going so well for you at the moment. We all have spells when things get us down and our diabetes has a mind of its own, so try and stick with it, things can get better again. How did your hospital visit go on Friday? Were they able...

Diabetes in Films and on TV

Body of Proof, an American crime series. Megan Hunt, the medical examiner, has a teenage daughter Lacey who is diagnosed T1. A small part so not critical to the story, but handled OK I thought.

Are eye floaters a common symptom from type 2?

"Proper" floaters tend to be quite stable and not come and go. If they change much or quickly, say with movement etc, then it might be a small bleed, which can look like floaters. A bleed is likely to be red at first (but not always, could be black). Perhaps a visit to your optician might be a...

Can you sense what your bg level is?

Yep, I can sense where my blood sugar is in the 4 to 8 range. Not always right, but I always guess before testing and I am pretty close.. I think that is because I was T1 diabetic for 20 years before blood testing was introduced. Clearing out recently I found some old HBa1c results from my...

    Blood testing

I think most pricking devices come with a different "nozzle" allowing to test from other parts of your body (such as upper arms). I believe there is a bit of a time lag (20 mins), and the finger tip blood is consider more up to date Google alternative blood glucose testing sites for more info

    how can people handle this?

I know the advice above is logical, but I think you make a good point. As an oldie here I read the introductions of the newbies, and think to myself "how did diabetes become so hard?". It's a balance of course, and the progress towards better health has come at a price. When I was diagnosed my...

My son has type 1 and I am really confused about diet?

I guess your son's diagnosis has been a real shock. Everyone on the forum will do their best to help. I was diagnosed when I was 11, and my weight changed dramatically too. My sister had been diagnosed a year before so when I became thirsty I did my drinking in secret, delaying the inevitable...

    Any Advice?!

There is research showing Lutein and zeaxanthin help improve eye health. If you have ever had advice to eat dark green leafy veg (such as kale) or egg yolks, then that is why. I take the boots version of eye vitamins as well as making sure I eat eggs and dark veg. (And here is one of the...

    Last Day on Lantus

Signy, Glad to hear you already feeling so much better. I'm using Humalog. The plan was to go to Actrapid and Insulatard, from Humalog and Lantus as it was the Humalog I thought was getting me down, but having changed to those two I had loads of hypos. Then, still trying to get it right we...

    Last Day on Lantus

Hope the changeover goes well for you. I changed back last year, after 10 years on Lantus, and am really glad I did. Wasn't having night hypos (I have more on the Insulatard, at least I did initially) but was having disturbed sleep though I only realised that after I'd stopped taking it. I feel...

Has anyone here been a diabetic for more than 40 years?

Yes, been diabetic on insulin for 45 years now. I'm doing pretty well, and while I have always paid attention to my diabetes, I'm sure luck has played its part. We've just got to keep soldiering on. How do you spend your days now you no longer work?
