    T1 ex-pats in Western Australia?

Hi everyone I'm trying to find a similar forum in Oz but I just can't find anything in WA at all. Just wanted to find a decent optometrist for my check ups in Fremantle area. The last check I had was meant to be a diabetic review but it was extremely quick - 10 mins in the chair. Back in the...

    Standard bolus/ multiwave bolus..

The way it was described to me is you have the standard bolus option for "all at once" dose. Then there's a wave that has a small spike then a long release which was suggested for things like chinese meals (which are sweet but also have long acting carbs). Or the long release which would be...

    New pumper!

Just noticed that where the old cannula was, there seems to be a bit of a lump under the skin. Is this usual? I'm not sure if I'm using the steel or teflon sets - whatever came as standard with the initial kit - 60mm tube. Also. Currently attached to my belt - is there a knack or tip for when...

What reason are you on a pump?

Shift worker - working a mix of earlies/lates and nights, random days in the week. Irregular meal times, forgetting to inject and sporadic BGL testing. Went to my registrar, asked for a pump, got one. (Much easier to get one here in Oz than back in UK)!

    New pumper!

Hi All On Wednesday I became the proud owner to an Accu-chek Spirit combo pump. Bloody hell! Massive learning curve but the more I play with it the more it makes sense. Day one I had a couple of hypos - I'm guessing because the basal lantus was still in the system. Since then I've had the...

    Glucose Monitors

Big supermarkets that have pharmacy's generally sell glucometers quite cheaply. IIRC I bought my Nano from Asda for about £8! I'm quite fond of the Roche guys as once you've registered with them they'll send batteries, parts or replace broken units without fuss.

    Day 3

Bit of an update.... I fell off big time. Spent past 2 years working in a secure psych ward in Australia and smoked and drank. The smokers seemed to get all the gossip and be "in" with management. I failed. Anyway. After realising my wife was pregnant, we planned to come back to the UK. In May...

Yikes... high BSL's after night shifts

Did a couple of night shifts Weds and Thurs last week and only just really recovered from them. Around 3am on the first night my BSL's were 22. Gave myself some insulin and checked a couple of hours later and they'd barely moved. And that's pretty much how it was until last night. Constantly...

    3 weeks to Oz!!!

HI Jen and others... Thanks for the info. I'm going to get the docs to do a letter - I can claim it back at the end of the day, so a few quid isn't going to break the bank. I will be staying in Perth for a year as I'm working there, but have 8 weeks, and weekends holiday so scope to travel a...

    3 weeks to Oz!!!

I would have thought a couple of boxes worth, in Freo bags, in a little hand sized freezer bag, stored inside my main luggage, should stay cool for 24 hours or so? Do I need a docs letter though? My visa application had a section where I told them I was diabetic, and they've had all kinds of...

Free Prescriptions - How long does the card take to arrive?

Are you talking about the medical exemption certificate? I've only been asked for it once in 8 years. You should be able to get your meds without it. I've had mine from Asda, Boots and many local pharms, not an issue.

    3 weeks to Oz!!!

Yep, three weeks until I fly out to Oz for a years work. Say hello West Coast! (Fremantle/Perth) Was planning on cycling to work until they considered moving me to a hospital 30km away! I said I didn't fancy riding to and from work (60km) in the Australian summer - inland with little wind, and...

Hot bath = worst hypo ever?

I think it's to do with the warm water affecting the viscosity of blood, making insulin work that bit faster. Same as hot weather can increase the risk of hypos. Having baths also dehydrate you. Strange, but the body tries to cool your core temp down. Also there's a scald risk. Dipping a toe...

    going abroad for a year...

Thanks Jo. Was a bit "umm" choosing which part of the forum to post in. cugila: yeah I kinda thought things would be a bit tighter seeing as you can end up in prison for bringing in mud on your shoes (ok, maybe a bit of an exaggeration but you know what I mean). My health check should be...

    going abroad for a year...

Just about to qualify as a mental health nurse and I'm looking into moving to Perth WA for a year to do a graduate programe. I'm T1 so is there a way of getting my insulin supplied while I'm over there as I do here? Can someone post it to me? I'm guessing the risk is that the insulin sits on a...

    cereal bars?????

Most are packed with sugar and MSG's. Be careful. I find a handful of mixed unsalted nuts and a piece of fruit works for me.

    Hypo awareness!

What do you eat? I mean, if you're getting PP spikes then something is causing that. what are your levels before you eat? what do you eat? what are your levels 2 hours PP? Are you injecting the right amount of insulin for the content of the meal?
