    NHS artificial pancreas roll out.

Yes, I was looking for the new news and there wasn't any. I was offered a pump 2 years ago but chose not to at that time as the hassle factor outweighed it's advantages for me. Mind you with an HBA1C currently of 67 mmol despite low-carbing, slim and low insulin resistance and endless correction...

Started insulin, gained weight. Help please.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree as I posted earlier. Insulin is a hormone and cannot in itself cause weight gain. Weight gain is almost certainly due to having a carb intake too high for your metabolism and metabolisms vary greatly between people. If anyone knows of any scientific references to...

    Flying with t1 diabetes

Hi. Security have never cared when I've been thru many times. Just carry a letter from the GP or nurse and of course a copy of your prescription.

    Could it be diabetes?

Nausea and vomiting are not common symptoms for diabetes.

Diabetic diet for weight gain ?

Not as such. Most weight gain is caused by the carbohydrates in the diet. These need to be kept under control for avoid weight gain and BS rise. Typical advice is to keep total carbs down to below 130gm/day. The NHS hospital food will be high in carbs. Increasing insulin to control BS may (or...

Sudden worsening of sugar levels for no apparent reason

I had a similar experience at age 50 but not so extreme. In my case I believe it was due to a virus. You are likely to need to go onto insulin as your C-Peptide confirms low insulin production. I've now been on insulin for many years.

    Statins again

Your GP doesn't appear to have a clue about statins. The connection between diabetes and cholesterol deposits is unproven. Any statin dose change should be based on your lipids test results not a guess by the GP. If your dose is higher than it needs to be it can be more harmful than not taking...

    Type 1

Hi. For me the symptoms of a hypo are feeling 'spaced-out' and hot and sweaty; perhaps a bit shaky. Ref ED the GP can prescribe Viagra. Do ask for a cgm on prescription such as Libre 2. As a T1 you are entitled to that. Mod edit to conform with forum ethos

Freestyle Libre 2 sensors always failing now

Hi. I've had very few problems of any kind with my Libre 2. I do take care to insert the sensor of the side of the arm where there is flesh. I cross the arm across my body to see where the fleshy area is before inserting. I've never ever had a problem with lying on the sensor and that may be...

    Libre2 App

The App is working fine on my Samsung S20. The only Logbook entries I have to display are normally just those from my Novopen 5 downloads. I hardly ever now scan my sensor as the Bluetooth 1 minute updates give me what i want but these BS values aren't entered into the Logbook; they only update...

    NHS Diabetic Education Training Course

Good to hear that you had a dietician who was up to date - fairly rare. As for the nurse she had been brain-washed by the usual (wrong) NHS mantra which is appalling. My lovely DN, who has sadly now moved on, always said to keep the carbs down where possible.

    Questions I am Pondering!

Hi. Exercise can cause BS to rise or fall depending on the type of exercise. I would try to avoid eating too many carbs when countering low BS when exercising i.e. only have a many as really needed. You may be able to train the body to convert glucose stored in the liver where possible rather...

    May have LADA

There are many things that can cause beta cell damage apart from immune response in childhood. As you have found it can happen when an adult and viruses can also do the same damage. I suggest you ask for a C-Peptide test to measure you insulin levels. A GP may be reluctant to do this and may...

    Healthy takeaways?

Hi. There are very few healthy i.e. low-carb take-aways for us. Always try to find out the Total carb content. Sauces can be full of sugar. If I go to McDonalds I always delete the bun when ordering a burger (it's an option on the ordering panel)

Started insulin, gained weight. Help please.

Worth repeating that insulin itself cannot cause weight gain - it's just a hormone, but if you eat too many carbs then the insulin enables to body to make use of the carbs. If insulin causes weight gain then the solution is almost certainly reducing your carb intake.

    Three-way split Levemir?

As the original poster perhaps I can add some extra thoughts. Apart from using my Basal to balance my liver's glucose output I also it to smooth my bolus use. My db is poorly controlled if I follow traditional guidelines. Only a small amount of carbs will cause my BS to rise rapidly. To avoid...

Note that viruses can also cause beta cell destruction so auto-immunity is not the only cause

Urgent help with Mother in law and hospital?

I would insist that she is allowed to manage her own insulin and testing. If she is otherwise fit to be discharged it would be safer for you to discharge her rather than risk a serious hypo the way she is being managed

Possible LADA? Unexplained highs and symptoms.

Hi. Yes it's important you do have an HBA1C test if you haven't had one. This would confirm if you are diabetic and your levels. If you have online access to your surgery's computer system you can look at your Coded results to see if they contain an HBA1C test result. It's certainly a...

Some advice on blood tests please

Hi. I have the same problem being listed as T2 but my consultant treats me as LADA. As my C-Peptide was just above the T1 limit he won't change my listing and I'm worried about my future care as T2 may not be taken so seriously even though I need insulin to survive. I was never overweight so...
