Introduce Yourself: Answer Some Personal Questions

Hey all. Well, I was an active member about 8-10 years ago but career, wife, and 2 children kinda took over and I just plodded along. Unfortunately this meant also being absent on here. Long and short of it, that I think was a mistake as I found it very helpful. So, to bring you all up to...

Do high sugar levels actually affect your mood?

Yup, definitely. Just think of it as a logical process. "Not enough insulin = body not able to use glucose = neurological/biological changes" Normally we would all think about the hypos causing neuro problems and changes in mentation. However, the excess glucose indirectly causes fluid loss as...

    dawn phenomenon question?

When I do OOH cover as the emergency vet my days can flip round; ie being up from 7pm to 8am. I find that my BG readings will also flip. So I have evening results in the morning and vice-versa. I change my meals to suit and tweak my rapid. One thing I don't ever want to do is have a hypo when...

    Steroids

Steroids unfortunately will impact your BG levels, causing them to rise. It's a normal and useful physiological result of this type of chemical. For example, your body naturally produces a hormone called Cortisol, which itself is a steroid. This is a "stress hormone" and causes a BG increase...

Not just the Cha Cha Slide ;-)

Oh yeah, a bit of a cryptic title but a method to my madness.... We're all well aware of the horrible hypos but I am just curious how low folk have ever been with their BG; and your symptoms? I am quite sensitive to insulin, only taking 2-3 units of basal and then 2-3 units of rapid per...

"Best" things doctors have said to you

A couple of weeks ago I developed a very itchy eye that became a little blood shot. So, knowing we all should look after our eyes I called opticians and booked an appointment. Arrive and sat in the chair, the optician went through the usual set of questions; including those ref my diabetes...

    High sugar

That isn't too bad really. I set my personal targets as 4-6 before meals and 6-10 after meals. Yup, sometimes it shorts really high; once a spike to 17.4! Then again sometimes I end up with a post results lower than the pre. Bloody confusing at times. If you're getting constant better values...

    High sugar

Yup, and often there is no logical reason. Remember though, the odd spike isn't too problematic. What were your other readings like/day average?

    Paint on my hamster!

Speaking as a vet best to leave it until it grows/falls off. Most things wont 'agree' with small furries I am afraid :-( How much is on it?

Inconsistent BG levels which are upsetting me. Help!

Stress will increase your BG levels. If you think about it this make evolutionary sense. For example lets say you're running away from a predator or getting ready to fight the stress hormones in your body rise. These hormones, especially Cortisol, causes BG to rise so you then have lots of...

Inconsistent BG levels which are upsetting me. Help!

Sounds like classic "Dawn Phenomenon" to me. If this occurs more regular it would be best for you to try to test yourself at several points during the night to ID any trends. D

    "A Year of No Sugar"

I was on FB today and a friend had posted up this... http://www.everydayhealth.com/columns/my-health-story/year-of-no-sugar-one-family-grand-adventure/ It would be good to hear what you all think. Plus, I reckon the book would be a good read if nothing else :-)

    Post-meal naps

Feeling sleepy after a meal is normal. The body diverts more blood to the GI tract after you eat. It makes physiological sense as you can then take in more nutrients, plus supply your guts with more energy/oxygen due to them working a bit harder. Prob is this means less blood to other organs...

AM bloods out of control. HELP NEEDED!

How can your diagnosis change? Didn't they find antibodies against your pancreas to confirm the Type1 diagnosis?

    Stressed and BG

When you're stressed your body releases a hormone called cortisol; which is a natural steroid. Steroids increase BG in all mammals. So the answer to your question is unfortunately yup. If you think about it, it make complete sense. In a stressful situation your body needs fuel; this fuel is...

Travelling to USA 1st time with pump

Hey Riri, Well, I am not on a pump but do inject insulin. I found the trick is a slow transition to the time zones; couple of hours each day. Now, Florida is 5hrs ahead of the UK so this isn't a big jump really. It is safer for you to allow ur sugars to go just that little bit higher for...

    Discussion TXNIP ;-)

I was just reading some clinical journals at work today (I am a Vet), and found a very interesting piece showing possible developments in the treatment of Type 1 diabetes. As per usual the headlines were hyped up but the content was an eye opener. Basically as of next year the human trials...

    40mmol/mol!!!

I am so happy atm as my last Hba1c came in at 40mmol/mol! This is with me on Humalin m3 @ 4iu morning and 6iu evening. My consultant would like me to reduce my insulin to 3iu morning and 5iu evening; then prepare to go onto the Basal-Bolus regime. So, over the course of 1.5yrs my Hba1c went...
