1/2 unit of insulin causing hypo

The consultant has said now only take a 1/2 unit of insulin if blood sugars are over 17 before a main meal, not supper. Only check blood sugar breakfast lunch and dinner and not in the evening! Seriously is it just me or does that not seem right.
My guess is the consultant is telling you not to test on the evening meal because if you then did a correction dose there would be the risk of a hypo while your daughter is asleep.

Juvenile onset ladies of the forum (and mums) - is there any chance this girl is going through menarche (getting her first period) and that is making her blood glucose go haywire?

The accu chek meters tend to read slightly higher than most bg meters including ones used in hospitals wnich raises a few ?? By Hcp

Is there any chance that yr daughter is eating some sweets on her way home from school? If she is, the bg level will of course go up but usually the effect from sweets is only temporary like an hour, so that might be the reason why the half or one unit is making her bg drop so quick

No she gets the bus home but hasn't been to school this week with being in hospital. She does eat a chocolate bar sometimes but I don't see a massive jump at the next meal. Like the other day she had a wispa in the afternoon and he sugar before dinner was 6.8.
Had a different day again today 6.8 am lunch 4.7 dinner 7.7 this evening 4.7. No insulin being given

Sorry for jumping to the wrong conclusion... As insulin is having an unpredictable effect...for the time being, it might be better to keep a watch on the amount of carb eaten and monitor its effect on bg rather than eat whatever and give correction doses of insulin.

My apologies too, sometiimes as adults tho' we can overlook kids being with non diabetic friends etc on way home... But I totally forgot the hospital this week..

However saying that.. What food did ur daughter have in hospital? I know for my stay this year they gave me icecream for pudding!!-I could choose main meal dishes, but puddings were just dished out willy nilly.

Is there any difference in food ate today to food ate with her extreme highs?

She just eats a normal lunch and dinner with 60 ish carbs, trouble is the next reading could be 4.0 or 12.0. Not really eating whatever, she is very much keeping in the routine of meals and a snack in between if hungry. We don't do corrections, there's no need she's not taking any insulin! to be honest we have nothing to work on right now. If she's going to have supper and her sugars are 19.5 before I don't expect a half unit to drop her to 2.6! This is the biggest concern she suffers overdose symptoms from a half unit.

donnellysdogs, she has had spaghetti hoops with her dinner the two nights that the sugars went high I kinda clocked that quite quickly.

Is there sny difference in fat with the meals? Eg could one be a cheese pizza? Or one have chips? Certain foods can impact later than expected..

I agree that the huge drop to 2.5 is a huge concern for minimalish insulin...It seems that really despite the hospital stay you are no closer to getting any answers.. I

She seems ok with chips. today she had chips and chicken nuggets at lunch and then before dinner she was 7.7. The only thing I know to date that caused higher than 12.0 was the spaghetti hoops, Really going to have to write all what she eats down and see if it's foods or time of day causing rise. My daughter was a real sugar addict before all this happened regardless of our intervention and prevention, I am amazed how she has adapted to a different lifestyle leaving behind energy drinks, Jellys sweets and more. I have tried not to starve her of sugar completely to ensure she's easier to handle throughout this process, she has an odd choc bar and few plain biscuits and all her drinks are sugar free.

the main thing is make it simple for yourself if you can, it will get easier and no doubt you feel overwhelmed which is very easy when your daughter isn't well and nothing makes sense.
for the short term you don't need to decide on the risk/benefit/myths of a higher fat diet, as it's short term to get her over the hump.
top up the lost calories of carbs with health fats, coconut oil is another good one, used to make MCT oil [don't buy it it's $$]
a lot here use http://www.myfitnesspal.com/ to keep an eye on intake.

the old, meat and 3 low starch veg with an eggcup of potato and a big knob of butter

Hi again, 2 weeks on and she is still off insulin. However the blood sugars have had totally different turn. In the morning it's around 5.4 and from there on she is struggling to keep it above 4.0 and even more strangely her blood sugar either doesn't go up at all or it goes down the lowest so far 3.3. Like today the first reading was 5.4 and with high carb food dropped to 3.9. I am bewildered the only thing I can say is this change happened when she got her braces off at the start of the week ! Anyone able to offer any advice?
