We are a group of independent film makers who are currently making a film to raise awareness about the true cost of type two diabetes for real people. We want to hear your story, the real implications of the disease on your life and the lives of your family and friends. We know that diabetes changes lives, but we want to understand all the details, how it specifically affects you on a day-to-day basis, every day. There are so many possible complications of diabetes, sufferers can loose their sight, or their feet. Some people suffer from strokes and others pay the ultimate price with their life.

In order to ultimately increase the awareness of type two diabetes the implications that it has on so many lives, we would like to have a understanding of the disease on an individual level. We want to assure you that this film is a piece of personal work and that none of your details will be revealed. You would simply be helping us to make others aware of the greater costs of type two diabetes.

What has type two diabetes cost you?

On this forum there are many very well controlled diabetics who have successfully warded off the above mentioned complications!! Are you going to be filming them as well or are you just looking for worst case scenarios?

They are right when they say they dont understand Diabetes or Diabetics.
Seems to me that this film is to shock, not inform.

Perhaps if you were to make a film on the successes and positive stories on here then it may encourage other diabetics to take control of their diabetes and not just sit back and wait for complications to set in.

Agree that on this forum you will tend to find those of us who are not prepared to accept that the diagnosis of diabetes will lead to a future of progressively getting worse.
Here you will find people who are not satisfied to follow medical advice without question if they believe that they can do better for themselves by informing themselves about scientific studies and questioning the interpretation at times.

Other people on this forum have helped me by journalling their bad experiences and their great experiences so that options I was never offered by my health systems are put in front of me.
Today's exercise group was a case in point. Maybe half of the women all aged in their 50s to 80 would have T2. There can be up to 35 turn up for this weekly group. There is only one of them who is remotely interested in how they have watched me lose 13.5kgs in 9 months and how by restricting carbs this has come about. When I tell them what I chose not to eat they withdraw saying "I could never give up potatoes, bread, tomatoes, pasta, rice.........................."

Their choice but I don't want to give up the ability to dance, walk, see, live. I want it all. 8)

I have read all the previous posts and agree totally with all that has been said.

If you are here to sensationalise stories about Diabetics and lack of control leading to complications - then I don't imagine you will get much help ?

As the previous poster states, we do not accept the traditional 'dogma' and most of us have achieved excellent control of our Diabetes by using methods which are contrary to the advice dished out by our HCP's. We know that it works and that tight control and testing of our Bg levels on a daily basis is what we need to do. Many of us have even reversed some of the complications by using these methods. Not something the medical establishment seems keen to hear about it seems ? Perhaps you could redress the balance and make people sit up and take notice ?

If this was the first thread I read after finding this forum , i'd feel unwelcome.
Of course it is nice seeing people climb Everest or running 10 miles but the other side should be covered too , why not? A
 
Does this mean that those of us with complications are supposed to now feel ashamed and like losers because some posters here are super healthy?

Shy Girl ,this post was aimed at the company not at members!! I don't think any of us would class ourselves as super healthy!! If you have complications then just maybe the info on this site can help you alleviate it a bit.The people who need to feel ashamed are the ones who have for years given the wrong advice to diabetics in managing their own conditions.
 
If you want the story of how the patients do best when they take control and how they know more than the medics, this is your place. If you want complications and disasters, visit the diabetes clinics.
 
I have nothing to add on this, I think the community has spoken clearly enough.
 
If you really want a shock horror story, what about what happens when you see how well some people do when they abandon the healthy plate with all those slow burning carbs :shock: :shock: :shock: Can you imagine what good viewing there could be, especially in high definition, in watching senior figures turning purple with the steam coming out of their ears? I'd watch that.
 
MMMMMMMMMMMMMM Now if you include MP`s who took expences over giving our boys what they need even better, lol.

I agree with a lot of what's been said, and as GPs and consultants appear to be letting down type-1s and type-2s as far proper care goes, that would be a better subject for a film.
Type-2s are not being given the tools or info to manage their condition. Many docs are clueless, about the diabetes(1 & 2), and some restrict prescriptions of the glucose testing strips, which are essential to good managment of the condition.
If this is yet another misleading campaign to focus on "dabetics" as fat, lazy and responsible for their condition, which seems to be the order of the day, I can see why no-one would be rushing to get involved. Many people come onto this forum, because they're getting lousy care and advice their doctors. Maybe the film should focus on the failings in diabetes care, then things may improve for all of us.

Hi everyone

Thank you for your responses, we can appreciate that you feel that there is a general and false perception of diabetics and the disease and that diabetes is not treated effectively enough by physicians. It is this misconception that we are trying to deal with while still acknowledging that unfortunately some diabetics will suffer from these extreme complications.

We understand that many of the complications of diabetes can be offset with healthy lifestyles and effective management as you all seem to be doing, but unfortunately, this isn’t the case for everyone. Either they have received poor guidance from their physician, or, as some of you have said, they are unwilling to give up foods such as potatoes, rice, pasta, tomatoes, etc.

We realise that it is a very fine line and our ultimate aim is to clarify the possible ‘extreme’ ramifications of type 2 diabetes, complications that can be delayed or prevented given the right lifestyle advice. But we don’t just want to hear about the sensationalist stories, we want to know all the day-to-day things that you have to think about and that the rest of us can take for granted. The things that both well- and poorly managed diabetics have to deal with every day, from blood glucose tests after meals to constantly having to watch your sugar intake.

We hope that this clarifies our position and what we are aiming to achieve and we wish you all continued success in managing your condition.
