Hey folks
I had a breakfast of an apple and a handful of grapes today before rushing out to run some errands before my docs appointment. I went shopping a wee bit later and purchased some Burgen soya and linseed bread, a wee tub of cherries and a half dozen free range eggs.

When I got home I tried a slice of the bread to see if it tasted as bad as it looked, but to my surprise it was quite nice. Anyhow for tea i had 2 boiled eggs sandwiched between 2 slices of burgen and a handful of cherries afterwards. I must say for the first time in weeks I felt full and mu stomach didn't complain, whats more is I didn't feel hungry 2 hours afterwards.

I know its not exactly a balanced diet but it surprised me a wee bit. I did get some alpen today but from what I have read its not as healthy as it makes out :P

Anyhow just thought I would let yall know. Tomorrow is lentil and carrot soup, I wont add the potatoes this time :P

Hmm might give the burgen bread a whirl myself
Changed to granary when I got diagnosed which I love so not sure which is best
Sounds like your thinking about everything :-)

Hi, apart from the eggs, it all sounds too carby lol sorry I know you don't want to hear that, look up low carb fruits, there are much lower carb ones :) carrots etc aren't the best choice either hehe, but dont listen to me, and hey whatever works for you I guess :) good luck!

ive been regretting my post.....I don't mean to be down on you, your doing terrific! I just meant a small tweak in the choice of fruits etc may be helpful, for example berries are far better than apples and cherries, sorry if I sounded negative I didn't mean to

Love reading other people's comments on posts I am newly diagnosed also so it really helps me too
And andy your comment didn't sound negative at all your just trying to help people
Made me think about fruit and veg
Thank you

The only major worry is grapes and the Alpen but you already knew that lol Cereals are Satan!! But the burgen bread substitute sounded like a good idea keeping you feeling full. Someone told me cherries aren't that high carb yesterday but I'm not sure; berries in general are great. It's bananas I'd avoid.

You're doing awesome, all proactive and stuff-stay positive :3

Thanks for the reply folks, and don't worry I don't take offense at all, It takes me a little longer than most folk to learn and I have no doubt that it will take me a wee while to sort it all out. I seam to be constantly thinking about this as the more I read them more confused I get. However thats just me. I may benefit from a more structured diet like the tesco one or something. The huge problem for me is veg, I can't keep down Cauliflower, Broccoli, cabbage or sprouts, I am not being picky because I have tried on numerous occasions but for some reason they don't like me. So I have to try and find alternatives and such.

I go to see my DN for the first time on Wednesday and by then my scales should have arrived. My old diet consisted of very unhealthy foods like crisps and pizza and lots of frozen microwave chemicals. Those have now gone out of the window (not literally mind) and have been replaced with things I though to be more healthy. I have also increased my daily actvity by walking briskly for half an hour along the coastal path which it steep in places.

I know I have a long way to go but its going to take time, It took around 7 years to put this weight on and I understand that losing it will be tougher. I just need to find a way that works for me. I admit I am worried about this and it is effectimg me a wee bit. I found myself looking at the clock only to find it was 2.25am.

So its no problem, I truly don't take offense and all advice will make its way in eventually :P.

Cheers for now folks

Hi Zaphod and welcome to the forum, I read your other post and then this one...

Have you bought a meter yet? The reason I ask is despite what your well meaning DN has told you it is imperative that you start testing before eating and 2 hours after as the difference in readings is the only thing that can tell you what to eat and in what sized portions without raising your blood glucose (BG) too much.

Its a bit like the police telling you that you dont need a speedometer in your car as they will check your speed for you every few months and let you know if youve been speeding and then fining you every three months when you drive too fast!! How would can avoid speeding without a speedo? You cant of course and neither can a 3 monthly blood test tell you what different foods will do to your bg levels.

The one single thing that can help you the most is knowing what you can safely eat and what you cant, and unfortunately as we are all different in what we can and cant eat it is no use at all relying on what others tell you. One person will say they cant eat carrots or apples but I eat both on a regular basis, you need to test and work out your own list of what you can eat, if you test thoroughly you may find that you can eat most things in some size of portion, you just need to work out what those portions are

It sounds as if you have already made some great alternative choices food wize, you just need to tweak things a bit now by testing.

Good luck :D

Edit: ps. to help with weight loss try buying a smaller diner plate, it really does help with portion control as it still looks like you have a full plateful of food but that plateful will be smaller

Thanks Sid
My friend gave me an unused accuchek aviva nano and a fastclix pricker thingy with a pack of lancet cartridges, unfortunately she didn't have any test strips but with her help I purchased some off ebay so just waiting for them to be delivered. In the very beginning I though it would be a good idea to check to see what foods were effecting me and despite the doctor saying I don't need to test, I didn't think there is any harm in testing. The doc told me the reason they don't recommend testing is because I am not on insulin therefore cant counteract the spikes etc. I know that but its not the reason I wanted to test, I thought it would be a good idea to find out what effect the food I eat is having on me and hopefully it can help me to adjust what i eat which can only be a good thing right?

I appreciate all the advice I get folks thank you.

Just to step in here, I didn't say they weren't high carb, I said they were VERY low GI. So they don't give the spike associated with other fruit. It's a gradual release, more like lentils

For example:

Banana is around 50
Apples 36 (off the top of my head!)
And cherries 22

So cherries are far better than apples or bananas when avoiding a spike.

As a T1 I've been told NOT to inject for cherries, as T2 I would still exercise some caution with them but they are better than other fruit!

Oh whoops, sorry! I made an assumption about why they're ok >_< Ok you see why I'm going to shut up now @_@

I suppose the double-whammy is when a fruit like bananas are both high carb and high GI? If something is high carb low GI you might have to look out for a BG increase creeping up later...right?

*is an idiot*

Not quite, anything under 55 is classed as low gi, an unripe banana (green) is around 30 and a ripened banana (yellow) is around 50, they are quite high in carbs compared to some fruits but it all depends on the portion size.

One thing I have been meaning to ask is about coffee beans. Since I quit smoking almost 8 years ago I have treat myself to Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans which I grind at home. Is this ok to drink, usually about 2 mugs per day, used to have 2 tsp sugar but for the last few days have cut it to 1/2 tsp and a splash of 1% milk (thinking of replacing sugar altogether with splenda). I dont know if I could cope without my JBM.

Mark

Try it without. I used to have two heaped teaspoons then stopped. Took me about a week to get used to it - then was horrible with.
Long before I was diagnosed.

Thanks charon, as long as I can still have my daily fix of JMB i can sacrifice the sugar :P.

Hi folks, didnt want to make a new thread so I have tacked this on.

Just got my meter test strips and did some testing today for the first time I dont know if I am going a wee bit overboard or anything but these are the results.

Lunch
1/2 cup Alpen, 1/2 cup of 1% milk
Steaming mug of coffee, splash of 1% milk and 1/2 tsp sugar.

pretest 5.6, post meal (2hrs) 8.6. went for brisk walk 25 minutes retest 5.4

Dinner
1 slice battered cod (youngs) and few microchips.
Mug of coffee as above

Pre meal 5.4. Post meal 7.3

I feel fine apart from some hunger pangs, not severe though but I am putting that down to the reduced portion size and lack of pizza and crisps.

I am drinking about 2.5 litres of water per day including the coffee.

I did have breakfast but didnt test as I had no strips. I am using the accuchek nano but I am tempted to switch to the codefree seeing as i buy my own strips.

As per usual all advice is welcome.

Hi mark
As for readings before meals between 4-7
After meals 5-9 think that's two hours after
My DN told me to test before meals and two hours after each meal when I first got diagnosed
Plus that highlights foods that are good and food that is bad
But I don't know everything and someone else will more than definately know more
Sounds like your thinking though which is always good :-)

Thanks Netty
I have been testing before meals then 2 hours after. Also I was surprised to find my levels dropped that much after just a 25 minute brisk walk. One thing i need to try and address, I used to miss meals during the day then kind of binge before bed time. Now I find my worst hunger pangs come on about bedtime. I am looking for something I cam maybe snack on ad lessen the pang until i get to sleep.
Any suggestions?
