Accepting that a part of your body doesn't work as it should, or how to get used to a minor disability?

I sympathise hugely with your problem @Antje77 , I have cervical spondylosis (not sure how this differs from stenosis?). This has up til now just caused pain and stiffness in my neck, but recently is causing pain running into my armpit and down the outside of my upper arm, I asked for a physio referral, which ended up being an on line questionnaire and a phone call! I was then sent a generic exercise sheet on line. Can I pls have a referral to your physios? They sound much more thorough!

Oh yuck, sounds nasty with the pain.
I'm at least lucky that the only symptom is the arm not working as it should, no pain except for some in my neck which isn't too bad.

Welcome to come visit of course, and have a date with my friendly physio, no waiting list!

So not sure what my question is, but I would like to hear your thoughts and experiences, maybe it helps!
Hi @Antje77

Little late to the post .

So sorry to hear that for you.

But as to coping strategies.

I know you've got this covered, but here's my pfennigs worth.

After my accident, it was all doom & gloom.

Which gradually lightened when I considered how much worse it could have been, & that inner me got its teeth into "no going down without a fight"

Nearly 3 years later, it's better but like you, I lost some abilities I thought I'd have forever.

So how to cope

Well, unlike the dinosaurs we adapt , as I'm sure you have.

Finding other ways of doing things you used to do, in ways that you can do, now.

Not perfect, but I think most of us are tough enough to get to & through that point .

And I'd say yes, it's a death of sorts .

I think I'm see-sawing now between anger & acceptance

Was 90/10, more likely 50/50 now.

Sure it dulls to be 10/90 at some point, but not sure if that wistful feeling ever stops it resurfacing when we reflect back .

As for work, while some manual labour jobs might be beyond you, others might not, depending on just what your dodgy arm can do .

And I'd give a big thumbs up for the communications type of work, you got that skill

And a world full of new ways of making a buck.

From influencers to travel guides etc

If nothing is lined up, no harm throwing everything into the mix and seeing if something you might not have seriously considered catches your eye, that right now is hidden under what we all 'expect' to be our route out .

I've had to do loads of little jobs outside my main job to keep myself afloat many years back at times.

Some I loved .. driving high end cars to and from London airport...
From driving the cars, to delivering drivers to the airport to manning the phones, etc.

If you find you've got a certain knack, use it I say.

And I did some that were more Meh.

And even from those I learned what I didn't like or wasn't very good at .

So life's never as clear as it seems, we just sometimes have to endure beyond the dark to see the cracks of lights that are always there, if we look hard enough.

So tl;dr.

We can't change the past, but we can adapt to the future, better then we thought

Best wishes my friend .

Its odd

I’ve been off work for nearly a year due to issues related to back/neck

It started with difficulty walking this is due to a cyst in the lower spine that causes compression on the spinal cord

I’ve also had issues with left arm…. Pain/numbness and difficulty with grip, this is caused by a severe root nerve compression in the neck

I also have a lot of mid back pain due to bulging discs and spurs on the vertebrae

Got an appointment in a month to discuss what surgical options are available

It’s difficult as physio has said I’m unfit / unsafe for work
I hope they can sort you out quickly @searley - that's the last thing you need.

I received an email from the second physio today, cc'd to the first one, who confirmed my understanding of the results and said my symptoms fit the diagnosis.
Tomorrow the first will be back from his break and they'll discuss what they can do for me, also depending on what the neurologist wants me to do (if anything).

I got lucky with the neurologist again, next appointment is in a week, much sooner than the assistant expected!

Best of luck Antje, hoping for a good outcome for you
